Tried to run him off by tossing a few rocks but came back 4 times and going inside with next building going on....flew onto the ledge and left a clean shot. Only way to deal with these HOSP's. Enjoy

- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.
Your purple martins and I are so glad that he is gone. If there was a female HOSP hanging around with him, she will leave. So your order of elimination was easier. No more cheep, cheep, cheep, ...
Now you can clean out his HOSP nest and a purple martin will have a chance at that compartment.

.17 HMR. Gotta love that cartridge. My son has a Savage bull barrel bolt action and I have Savage heavy barrel semi auto. Most accurate guns I've shot in a long time. It will put the absolute smacky smack on a sparrow...among other things. We have killed wild hogs with these rifles.

A little overkill but this Marlin bolt action .22 w scope using long hollow points is very accurate and a great gun. Didn't post the underside cause it wasn't much left. Quick clean death is the way I hope I go.Black Jack wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 1:22 pmJust bought me a nice Remington 572 and some CCi sub sonic ammo for next year. i had been using a 17 HMR Way to loud around Martins. Black jack and Deancamp and 4th gen I know this is a martin board but would love to see photo's of the rifles you guys mentioned. This Marlin is a special edition as not many were made with the stainless barrels and unique stock. One of my favorite looking rifles. She is loud but perty! Thanks for the support.

Good shot! Not to derail the thread with firearm chat but have you guys heard of this XM1: https://usa.stoegerairguns.com/xm1-supp ... pcp-airgun
I'm interested but I haven't seen any reviews, not even sure if it has provisions for mounting a scope.

Both of those rifles are spectacular.
That HOSP experienced Silent Death. No pain or suffering which is humane.
John,
I checked out the website and found that the aluminum alloy receiver is machined for a scope The combination package has a scope and suppressor.

I shoot a lot of HOSP around my martins with a 20 gauge shot gun. Early in the season they will scatter and soon return. Now, often times they won't even fly off, except occasionally some will follow the the HOSP to the ground mobbing it.
