Martin Colony History: Started trying in 2012 and still trying

Attention landlords:
Please take a few moments and report your subadults, for those of us sitting on pins and needles STILL hoping to start a colony. Haven't seen a darn thing, and once again I'm beginning to wonder what the hay! Believe me, the only thing I haven't done is place a vacancy add on here, but I'm pretty sure they haven't learned how to get online

thanks,

Dave

lol!!! I hope your request ends up showing more subs further north than what is on the map, currently. I haven't seen one yet this year at all either.

Hi Dave,
None reported on our Iowa Organization as of 4/22/19. But, I do believe they are probably at least at the Missouri/ Iowa border.
ImageMite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.

I see there’s a sy report half way across Iowa today. Maybe they’re finally starting to move again. I’m home this week maybe I’ll get lucky.

Well it looks like they (SY) finally showed up in West Des Moines and Slater, Iowa. Now I'm really gonna go nuts with uncontrollable anticipation. Aint spring migration in the Midwest marvelous.

Finally observed some Martin activity overhead between 7 and 8pm on the 8th of May in Pleasant Hill. If they heard the vocals they ignored them.

2017 SY pair made nest and laid 2 eggs but lost female male moved on

I'm in the Kansas City area and this is my third year. I have kept notes the last 2 years and the SYs that have been at my site were here the last 2 weeks in May into the first 2 weeks of June.

So far this year I have had an ASY male visit last Saturday followed by what looked like an ASY female last Sunday. I'm assuming they were just visitors from another colony.

All that said I'm hoping some warm south breezes bring the subbies north. I've 6 compartments and 3 gourds with vacancy.

Phl Dave I would like to think we still have a solid 2 wks chance for seeing some subadults arrive at our home sites. Not sure on the sy females but still have seen only 1 sy male at the satellite area to date so more have to forthcoming. The two asy males that have been hanging around my home site are out looking for them right now! I was able to feed them flipped crickets the last few days of the cool temps. They've been here about 3wks now waiting for subadults. Attached is a photo of them taken this weekend.

Here in south Texas I saw significant northbound swallow and Purple Martin migration last week.

What's the latest on this topic?

I'm still hopeful here around Kansas City but not seeing as much action as I did last year.

Subbies has turned into 2 pr with nests/green leaves and at least 2 more pr paired up and getting serious; and 3 bachelor male subadults here daily in W. Des Moines Iowa. Subbie arrivals maybe just starting to peak/level off?? Good luck everyone waiting and don't give up an ounce of hope till mid-late June this season. I waited 7 years. Play the dawn song/chatter anytime you're home with speaker on pole. It all starts with getting visitors each season and the recordings do bring them in and they can here it from pretty far away.

I have never seen so many subadult purple martins as I have this spring! I am located here in southern Iowa . As Tim Gedler stated migration may be leveling off but I’m pretty sure there are still A few weeks left of decent numbers migrating through our colony.
Good luck to all of you still waiting ,hoping they show up soon.
