- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.
Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

2016 100 pairs 600 babies fledged added another t-14 and have 126 openings now
2015 Jun 24 360 babies and 58 eggs also found one that had died
2017 632 babies 11died and 20 were killed by hawks

The wind forecast was on the money. The southern gates are opening today. Strong winds originating over the Gulf will push way up into the north regions over the next few days. It is possible this will push birds further north earlier than normal.
Texas will see super strong winds with this system and the poor upper Midwest will continue to be on the wrong side of the system.
But the northeast will come to life with lots of new arrivals. Perhaps PA will see it's first arrivals including my site in Fombell on Friday.

Yes DKC the trough will set up right along the Texas coast. Northern Texas and Oklahoma will also be on the backside of this system with strong NW winds. So this event is primarily geared toward the south central, South Eastern and North Eastern US.
So just east of you strong south winds across the Gulf will continue into Louisiana and Alabama.

Missouri & Illinois will be a day ahead and the east coast a day behind. Ohio can keep an eye out right on the 14th.
They always seem to straggle in a day or so after these systems across the board. Sometimes showing up in the cold after the front passes.

- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
We just loaded nest trays, so we're ready & waiting . The earliest I ever got Martins was March 23rd. Usually they start arriving the first week of April.

Those winds are definitely bringing them north. I heard that a friend of mine in south west Iowa got a martin on the 12th. His earliest arrival ever.

This post was not intended to predict YOUR first arrival first thing this morning. It was merely to alert those anxiously waiting that conditions are fantastic for migration north.
If you look at the current wind and temperature map the warmth and southern flow has indeed arrived. The weather map does not always look like this in March. Most times it is the complete opposite with cold north winds. Many folks will be reporting first arrivals due to this. Some earlier than normal.

They are in fact moving north right now and the purple dots will increase northward quite a bit in the next few days due to this weather scenario.
I am only trying to add something of interest to this forum regarding migration and weather. Not sure what your intentions are, or what weather you are experiencing.... but It's 71 degrees here.
