Our first martins of the season showed up yesterday. Two females and one male. So happy. Today another female joined the group. It's the first time we've ever had more females than males to start the season. A little unusual for us.

The question is, does anyone think that advancing males may have perished in the extreme cold that went deep into the south earlier this month? I guess it could have happened. The ladies seem to be looking for the males. I'm sure time will remedy the situation.

Good luck to all this martin season

Just back now from Cahokia Mounds historic site in your area (Collinsville IL). A friend and I had the parking lot rack of gourds lowered to change out old nests and a male and female landed on the top perch, vocalizing and unconcerned. Such enchanting birds; they're the best.
