there are some at Epcot, near the butterfly house & gardens, with monorail swooping by. those young martins get to see some amazing things!

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

I have seen the several times at Epcot but when we go it is after they have already gone south for the winter. Last time I was there I questioned one of the ladies working in that area about the predator guards they use. You can see them in the bottom of the picture. The ones I saw are round aluminum that go around the pole. They are almost wider then they are tall. They were maybe 18-24 inches off the ground and I would imagine every predator in Florida that would be a threat to the martins could get up them. The stock answer I got from the lady is that they stop anything from hurting the martins. I didn't argue with her but I knew better.

At Epcot if you take the Monorail, you will see them on the right side as you pass between the Test Track and the Mouse Gear Shop. It's a really beautiful setting. They have them near the entrance to Animal Kingdom as well. They have some spread across the golf courses also. It really is an amazing environment for martins. It wouldn't take much for Disney to establish the largest colony in North America with all of their open green space, lakes, and abundant natural resources. Plus they have the Volunteers, Purple Martin and Disney fanatics that would probably do an amazing job of running it.

Just think of the educational advantages this colony is providing. It is a great thing for the general public to learn more about the species.
