Had a first
While cutting the grass I usually have TS barn swallows following me picking off the bugs I kicked up. Well tonight I had a few martins doing the same. Never have then done it. This year or last.
They were flying pretty low not their usual higher up.

I always have a large following of Barn Swallows following me when I am mowing my big field behind the housing, it is a feeding frenzy. From time to time the Martins will join in on the action.

At my old colony I never had this happen, only barn swallows and tree swallows. This year and last year I had martins also taking the bugs near the mower. I only noticed it when they are feeding young. Before they hatch and as they are fledging young I think they just feed as normal.

Years ago I has a neighbor lady frantically in panic due to martins swarming near her. I went investigate her distress. Her husband had accidentally mowed off the top of a flying ant nest releasing thousands into the air and she just happened to be nearby. The martins were eating the flying ants and not dive bombing her. I explained what the martins were doing and she quickly decided martins were now her best pals and saviors. Within 15 minutes there were no flying ants to be found in her yard.
I have a lot of grass to mow also (airstrip) and the barnies are usually there with me. This miserable cold nasty spring there were no bugs to be had and I had scouts. I mowed the strip even though it didn't need it just to stir up bugs in the grass. I was amazed to see those B-52 size scout Martins down there at low level like the barnies, but they had to eat!!!

2015 24 gourds, 22 nests. Lotsa birds!
2016 24 gourds and good activity.
2017 32 SREH gourds. Great activity.
2018 40 SREH gourds. Good finish despite big storm damage. No more dangling gourds.
2019 56+ SREH gourds, all on 3/8 rods. Birds did very well.
2020 56 SREH gourds.

Haha! yep, no end of them. about as exotic as south texas gets. thank the good lord they dont compete with martins, we'd be through!
