I've got little pink babies today!! Twenty one to be exact and ninety eight eggs. Nests all look good, clean dry and no bugs. Still have hopes for three late nests that are still being added to. My starling trap has been getting a sparrow a day last week but last night I found a female bluebird in it. I carefully removed her, gave her a couple strokes on the head and set her free. She wasn’t very happy about it!

Congrats on your pinkies, and many eggs... had the oppertunity to visit Dick and Cathy Morrow yesterday in New Concord , Ohio ...Wow he has a bunch of martins and is having a fantastic summer.

3 late nests made mostly from black mulch from flower beds, just a few green leaves. Still hoping these pan out but I think it’s getting a little late.

My wife and I had a chance to visit Sugarcreek this past week, what a beautiful location!! The Amish countryside there is ideal for his Martin colony. He’s definitely going to need another house next year. Best of luck Mike, thanks for the visit.

7 eggs to hatch maybe more,mama was sitting on one of the nests!
Found my first infestation of mites on a nest with most mature chicks. I treated with Sevin dust to try to keep them from spreading to other nests. We had a little over 4” of rain this past week but nests were in good condition. The dragon flys are sure getting thinned out in the area! It’s fun to watch mama squeeze those big bugs into the crescent shaped openings!!

Other bird happenings...
The barnies started to fledge yesterday. The parent birds are sure grumpy when I venture into the barn!
I have a new nest of Bluebirds by the gazebo with 4 eggs as of this morning.
And the chimney Swift’s have hatched in my fireplace chimney. They seem to be extra vocal this morning for some reason.

Nest check today showed about half fledged. Forty seven close to taking the leap, probably this week. Seven pinkies and four eggs that should hatch this week. I actually had two fledge while I was checking this morning. They made their way to the nearest crabapple tree and were quickly surrounded with the coaching staff of about six adults. I often think their encouragement is a bit overwhelming for the newbies!
I’ve only lost two chicks so far. I think it may have been the hot weather.
Yesterday evening they looked so crowded stacked up on top the T14s, I put up an additional perch pole made from an old TV antenna. They seemed to appreciate it.

Lots of empty nests this morning! Looks like thirteen will fledge soon and eleven with a lot of growing to go. All eggs hatched except one, I think it’s a dud.
Yesterday, I found two jumpers that were very close to being able to fly. I lowered the house and placed them in what I felt was the correct nest. They were still in there this morning all seems to be well.

Just 12 more to go, 3 may fledge this week. The other birds come and go but most have moved on. My jumpers all made it finally after 3 days of placing them back in their nests. My last family hatched has a lot of catching up to do, they are just getting a hint of grey color to them. Already making plans for additional housing for next year. I’ll likely set stub posts in a couple weeks.

Buckeyefarmer... Sounds like you are having a great year.. I have had great success this year at the Golf Course Colony.. 15 pair.. A lot of the little ones have fledged so far. Yesterday I checked again and still have two nest to start flying yet. I did see 5 little one sitting on the porch being fed. Another nest with their heads sticking out of the door being fed.. Been a super year..
