Hello All, today was an exciting day here in Virginia. I had my 1st purple martin vistors today. I had a lonr male flying around the gourds this morning and 4 more birds also made a visit to the farm today as well. I put up my housing unit last summer in August which was probably way to late but I figured better late then never. I just wanted to share my joy with you all.

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

Congrats :). Don't give up. Hopefully one or more will decide to stay. If not this year, maybe next year.

Congrats and welcome. What type of housing do you have? How is your layout/yard (tree etc. nearby?). Also are there any colonies that you know of nearby? I remember the excitement of the first visitors.

I have 12 troyer grounds on a 14 ft. Pole. The rack is located about 60 ft. from two maple trees and is near my garden and along the horse pasture fence. I think it is a good open area. The house is about 50 ft. Away too. A Male and female were back again the morning checking out the gourds and sitting on the rack. I believe someone has a colony about 2 miles away.

That many? Would definitely love to see that.

By the way, newbie here. A photographer by profession, I usually travel around, camera in the trunk and my dog at the backseat, secured in his dog crate. I've been going around the various states looking to take the best purple martin photograph. Cheers!
