More purple martins then rooms

Well I went out this afternoon and looked up at my p m house and counted 14 pm sitting around the house. It appears as though some more have moved in looks like there are some SY. My house has 12 cavities I’m not sure weather I will be able to house all these birds or will they keep looking for some other place over time?

- Martin Colony History: Several colonies with in 6 mile radius.
Have had visitor every year 2014-24.
Two large trees removed in fall 2024 and moved T-14 to a more open location.
2025- 1 SY pair. Fledged 2.
I know a spot they can stay

2015-23. Visitors each year. But no pairs.
2024- most active year. 2-4 SY male’s hang out most days.
2025, 1 SY pair. 2 eggs, 2 fledged!! Other martins visited daily.
Still eliminating starlings and sparrows.

- Martin Colony History: Mom n Dad had a plastic 12 unit martin house with some martins as long as I can remember. In 2013 they had 1 pair. I don't think they fledged any. I then started learning how to take care of martins and in 2014 we took that house down and put up a Troyer 18 gourd rack. We had 7 pair with 28 fledged.That summer I built a T-14 (I was only 12). I was also given 4 natural gourds that I hung beneath the T-14. In 2015, we had 23 pair although only 22 pair fledged young. They fledged 88 young. In 2016, we had 36 pair, 210 eggs, 163 hatched, 149 fledge!! One pair fledged 2 broods. In 2017, I had 36 pair with 35 fledging young. They laid 204 eggs, hatched 155, and fledged 152.
If there are 12 cavities and 14 martins, that means there would be 7 pair (if 7 are males and 7 are females) which would leave 5 vacant cavities.

I’m not so sure about that I counted 14 on the outside of the house and I am quite sure that there were some inside that I could not see as well. Many times you can be watching them and there will be one perched on the porch and suddenly one will come out of the cavities that you didn’t ever think was there!

Yes very possibly time to get more housing. And very likely there were more inside. I was just thinking how I can easily forget that there are two adult birds per cavity.

I’m sorry! I wasn’t really bragging or trying to offend anyone I wasn’t really prepared to collect a colony like that on my first year of putting up a house. I have read articles where some people have waited years before they housed a pair of martins and that’s kind of what I was expecting.

Just pulling your leg. I got a sore neck looking outside just in Hope's of someday seeing a Martin at my set-up. Wish I was in your shoes!

So that’s why I’m walking like I’m limping today one leg is longer then the orher LOL. I will pray to the Purple Martin Gods that some will come your way soon.

Tried to attract PMs 2004; began more earnest attempt in 2014.
Current home site consisting of 2 modified Trio M12Ks, 4 ChirpyNests, and assorted artificial gourds, all enclosed in owl/hawk cages.
