Well this will be the third year I’ve hosted a pair of SY nesting Martins the previous year and not have any return as adults. Actually if history repeats itself this will be my year off again. So with the adult migration winding down for Northeast Ohio I’ll need to fire up the Dawnsong AGAIN and put my faith in the SY birds.
I’m finally at peace though with setup and plan on changing nothing. My site is just not ideal for martins and I guess I feel fortunate that I at least had a nesting pair 3 out of the 6 years I’ve tried. This will be year 7 and I typically do not see any Martins until mid-May so I still have a chance.
When is the latest you established landlords notice returning adult birds in the Northeast Ohio area?
Good luck to everyone still trying to get off the Wannabe List.
Mitch

- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
Mitch:
Migration for many is running behind this year. Many may not have survived it, due to the bad weather.
The latest I've had ASY Males arrive is May 12th here in central PA.
Hang in there.

If it is going to happen, I suspect it will happen next week as the weather is going to warm up.

I feel your pain Mitch. I had 5 SY pair last year, three pair fledged young and 2 pair that stayed all summer but never nested.....Anyway I have one ASY male that is here every morning and from time to time another stops by. Hoping some SY' females show up before he decides to look for greener pastures. Has been a weird season for me. The ASY male showed up a couple weeks ago. He is here bright and early every morning but I very rarely if ever see him again during the day and I have never seen him come back in to spend the night. Not sure if he is sleeping here or somewhere else. I just know each morning at sunrise he is sitting somewhere on my housing.

sorry to change the subject here, but i have started new topics before, but can never remember how to proceed to get to 'new topic'. i might not have permission, though i was able to do this before. i think I've run through every permutation of clicks, and read the help topics to no avail. can someone list the steps for me? not that i have any deep thoughts here. just curious..
thanks, tim boyd

- Martin Colony History: Colony established May 20, 2017 after three unsuccessful years. Persistent and aggressive Tree Swallows plagued the site, but beyond learning - and practicing - to control them, was the return in 2017 of a 2016-SY-M previously unable to find a mate. As a handsome ASY-M, he brought along two females and a swagger that soon put the Tree Swallow issue to rest. As the anchor pair, he and his mate hatched all six of their eggs into fat and healthy babies into what settled in to be a three-pair, flourishing new colony with up to 11 birds total, including 3 SY-M trouble makers.
Pretty slow here in SW Ohio also. Just glad to have my six ASY adults (3 pair), and call me crazy, but they sure act like the same six from last year - my first year to have nesting PMs!
Looking forward to the SY fly-in, even if they are trouble makers.
My peak number of total birds last year was 11, and am beginning to think I'll be lucky to match that this year.

Sharon,
You were 100% correct when you said tomorrow. I posted this thread on Friday evening.... Saturday at noon there sits a beautiful ASY male on the porch that he fledged young out of last year!!!!! I was thrilled to say the least!! He was back again today sitting on the same gourd rack. This is the first time in 7 years having an ASY male at my site. It just amazes me these birds can fly to Brazil and back to the exact same location!!!
My season typically doesn’t start until around the middle of May so I’m excited my founding male made it back!!!

Wow Tor going from 4 pair to 32 pair in one year is huge!!! I’d be over-whelmed with 5 or 6 pair. My male went into his gourd that he fledged 4 young out of last year about 8:15 this evening. This will be the first time I’ve ever had an adult male at my site. I hope he brings in some more birds. Let’s hope he is able to attract a female before too long!tor wrote:Now you’re talking, Mitch. Hoping he sticks around for you. My 1st colony started after a lone SY returned his second year. He found a mate and then attracted 4 additional SY par. A wise person once told me an ASY male is like an instant colony. A female will definitely mate up with him.

- Martin Colony History: Mom n Dad had a plastic 12 unit martin house with some martins as long as I can remember. In 2013 they had 1 pair. I don't think they fledged any. I then started learning how to take care of martins and in 2014 we took that house down and put up a Troyer 18 gourd rack. We had 7 pair with 28 fledged. That summer I built a T-14 (I was only 12). I was also given 4 natural gourds that I hung beneath the T-14. In 2015, we had 23 pair although only 22 pair fledged young. They fledged 88 young. In 2016, we had 36 pair, 210 eggs, 163 hatched, 149 fledge!! One pair fledged 2 broods. In 2017, I had 36 pair with 35 fledging young. They laid 204 eggs, hatched 155, and fledged 152.
Great news!!!
So happy for you! I am certain he will have a female join him soon. Hopefully they will attract several other pairs and all will be successful.

Just an update guys!
Went home today to find 2 ASY males, 2 SY females and an SY male at my site. To have 5 martins chirping and carrying on at once was an absolute thrill for me not to mention having 2 dark purple adult birds!!!! Hopefully this is the year I break my pattern!!
