I've met a few in North Louisiana, but around me I haven't connected with any. I know they are out there. Thankfully the Facebook pages keep us plugged in and learning from each other.

Keep trying, don't give up! I moved a few years ago and was martinless for the first time in 10 years...it was a sad year. I had to step up my attraction methods, but I got two pair the next year, three last year. My park site went from one pair to 28 pairs in just one season. I can't wait to see what this year brings!

Hi Krista,
Keep going on trying to find mentors in your area. I have had my public site up for three years and have found only two mentors to help with the site. I know it gets tough, but know you are not alone. I found one of my mentor helpers through our local Audubon Society.
ImageMite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.

Louisiana landlord here. I'm in Baton Rouge but my colony is in East Feliciana Parish. I've been a landlord for 14 years now. For the last five years I've consistently had 30 - 35 pairs and fledged 100 - 150 young. I made some pretty big upgrades last year and am finishing the upgrades this year in an effort to get to super colony status. For 2017 I will be offering:

1. 2 - Wooden T-14's each with 4 - excluder gourds underneath
2. 2 - Modified Trio Castles - one is a complete rebuild, the other I purchased new (I have a second that is in need of a rebuild but the last one took over 50 hours)
3. Gemini Gourd Rack - 4 THG, 4ExG, 6 modified ExG, 6 modified SG, 4 TVG
4. 5 - Modified Trio Grandpas

Total I will be offering 114 cavities this year. I have pretty much built everything until I bought the Gemini rack, and the castle. I already mentioned the other castle awaiting a remodel and then I have 3 trio grandpas that have been deconstructed that need cleaning, sanding, priming and painting. I have three trio grandmas that need reworking as well. One I use as a sparrow trap house. The other two are deconstructed awaiting work. I have a trio mussleman house and 8 room coats that I need to get back into service as well.

I'm willing to help out where I can. My wife and I have two young daughters (4 and 2) so time is a precious commodity right now! Hahaha! But I am more than willing to answer questions from new landlords or provide opinions/advice. I love this hobby and would love to see more people become landlords. Let me know what I can do to help.

Hi, I am a fairly new landlord, I have had martins for a few years now. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help,. I probably have more questions than answers at this point, but have managed to trap house sparrows when they try to nest in my martin or bluebird houses, so I know a bit about that. I am located in East Feliciana Parish.

I have had a martin house 6 plex for over 15 years 4 years ago I got serious and went from 6 to 36 houses last year I came up with a new design and added 12 this year I went totally crazy and built all new houses with my new design I had 12 of this design last year on 1 pole and had 11 cavities filled so this year against what I have read on this site I took down all my poles down spread them apart as much as possible and 48 new houses with my new design and hopefully they will come back last year I had 30 or 40 pairs but was working to much to keep track I did a nest check towards the end and had 195 babies and 30 unhatched eggs but with work I cant check them . All house are alum I will take some pictures of my designs and pole configurations to post I have built everything by hand so that if people need some of my knowledge I will happily give someone and directions that I can .

any inclination as to why your numbers went down mike trees around them or predators ? I had a problem with hawks until I started loading my houses with decoys almost every day I would find a decoy on the ground or sometimes just gone sometimes 50 yards away I would never know. I move them every week and I think they got tired of them and started to leave them alone all of them have claw marks through out the plastic.

After reading about and seeing steve kreonke colony of martins and reading his posts exstivenly. I concluded that martins prefer gourds or rather gourds are spread out enough so that male dominanace is a little less of a problem. So me being cheap and not wanting to buy 60 gourds I decided to build little bird houses out of alum and make a hole new system since I am a master sheetmetal worker and the material is free for me best price. The houses are 6x6x12"deep there is a 2 " deep attic and vent holes along the sides and vent holes at the ends of the gables. The porch extends 3" with a perch on the end.

Hey Bobby, I am still not sure why my numbers are in decline. Trees are not the problem and as far as hawks sure I have had my share of attacks but I don't i don't think that is it. I have 4 dummies on each of my 3 poles 8 gourds on each of them, Like you i can tell when they have paid a visit, dummies on the ground or hanging upside down. Hoping this year will improve.
Man you ought to go into business building those houses. They are outstanding. What a great idea you had. The birds should really take to them. You will have to let us know how your year went. I know after seeing these houses more Landlords will want to know how you did.
Good luck!

with such a drastic change I am hoping I am not running off my martins there is only one way to found and I threw the dice. There are about 6 houses down the street that are riddled with sparrows but they still have martins they would visit mine last year I hoping this year they will transfer over to my condominiums. I have eradicated all sparrows from my houses the fly over my house like its the plague and the smaller starlings that breach my SREH holes don't do it twice if I see them. They say not to make drastic changes but my other house were so hard for me to deal with they had to go. I changed my pole design so much that I can just stand and check the nests. Last year my houses would not lower enough and every time a hawk knocked a decoy around I would be on a 6' ladder with the houses completely lowered. Not any more its easy for me and the martins have a nice safe place to raise there young they will be back I have faith. I have boat winches on all polls and the alum tubing that I designed has 1/2 polycarbonate that a ran through my planer to make it exact so they just glide up and down the poles no hang ups.

Well I think you are going to do just fine this year. I would be pumped up also if I had those new houses. Sounds like you needed to upgrade for safety reasons if nothing else. It is easy to fall off a ladder and get hurt. I think your neighbor is going to run is birds off because of the sparrows and lack of taking care of his colony. You could get some or all of his birds. Good Luck!

It is really so strange I have a friend of mine not more than 600 yards from my house her birds come early end of January mine last year didn't show up till around april she is a very good landlord this year she has 8 already and today I actually had 2 circling my house and 1 was swooping at the houses that I have up and after about 5 minutes had landed and sat on the top for about 5 minutes then flew away. So I might have some early birds Saturday I am going to rake up some pine needles and make nests in my houses . Last year I was trying to figure out if its worth it I put pine needles in half my houses and some birds were taking the needles out and other birds were picking them up off the ground I think I am going to make the nest and if they don't like it they throw them out. Crazy birds and the people that love them

Hey, so glad to see some Louisiana Landlords responding. I'm actually not trying to find someone to mentor me, I was looking to see if anyone needed mentoring or guidance. Plus, I thought it would be great to connect with some local folks.

Thanks for responding. Krista

Evan, I believe I sent you a message via Craigslist...you were recycling old aluminum housing or looking for housing to take down that's been neglected. That's wonderful. I'm managing a public colony, just put up two new sites at two schools, and have a site at home. No martins yet. How about you? If you're on Facebook, look up The Purple Martin Group...several of us from Louisiana on there. If you're ever around Denham Springs, stop by North Park and take a look at my public site by the walking path. Post pics of your set ps. Sounds really nice. Thanks, Krista
