How far are the trees from your housing? It's hard to guess from the picture.

Oh there’s 5 fence rows, they go this way and that way! I have one on the south side that borders my property. Weather permitting the rate he’s going he should be here taking mine down by the end of December. That’s just a guess.
Right now the fence row that borders ny property is about 130’ from my poles. After all of them get cleared my martins will a a good mile of open field before any trees. How great is that! :)
I’ll keep posting pictures to make it more clear. I’m bad at distance estimation but he’s an outa 1/4 mile from my house clearing now.
Here’s a google pic with what he’s clearing scribbled out.

It's nice to get a flyway for the martins but I know that in Southern Ontario the removal of fencerows has had a detrimental effect on other native species. Fields that were once about 10 acres are now 100's of acres. It's not just the affect on wildlife but also opening up large areas to wind and water erosion. With climate change we only need a few years of drought and we'll have a situation far worse than the dirty thirties. :-(

18 pair in 2017.

If only a couple of neighbors would cut a trash tree or two...

Still had 18 pair.

Sharon: I guess dreams really do come true. The hawks will have more trouble ambushing your martins. It will be so nice to see your birds flying in the distance. What I like most is it will open up that pond that is surrounded by trees and your birds will really love that advantage (if that is a pond that the picture shows). Next year will surely be your best season so far. Good Luck ED & Mona

Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

Thanks everyone! I’m really excited about this! I live in a low area and it will bring a breeze from the south in the summer! :)
Ed and Mona it is an old borrow pit when they built the highway! It wraps around to the side of my shed! Just a hole that needs dug out deeper and I’d put fish in it! It floods his field when it rains heavy! The culvert that goes across under the highway was not put in low enough to keep it draining! But it’s always filled up in the spring when the martins arrive! They will like it when there’s no trees around it! He’s right by my house clearing now because he has a few deer hunters hunting this weekend! I should get multiple pairs next year with this happening! Good luck everyone! :)

Thanks to everyone on here. You kept my faith and it happened! Now I’ll be wide open next spring! The female will be an ASY and he will be 3 im guessing! They both did awesome protecting their babies. All fledged! I won’t be changing anything! All gourds will be placed in the same spot they were last year! Poles will be placed on same ground stake!

The martins should come and feel safe this year. The closest trees will be in my front yard. Close to 200’ away! Any danger lurking in those tress should be detected before they could sneak up on them. (The young ones will always be vulnerable). I’ll post a new picture soon. It’s just hard to get the full perspective of the clearing on a picture. The next updated google picture will be the best and they just updated a few years ago. So a few more years yet!

Good luck to all! :)
