I have searched the PMCA website and can not find a pdf file for playing the Dawnsong and Day Time Chatter CD's.
Is there one? If so, would you point me in that direction?

Pole #1, T-14 with Troyer Tunnels and 1 brown natural gourd, 1 white natural gourd, 1 Troyer Horizontal gourd, 1 Troyer Vertical gourd hanging underneath, 96' from residence.
Pole #2, K-Series 18 gourd rack with 1 PMCA's Excluder, 3 Troyer Vertical, 3 Troyer Horizontal gourds, 64' from residence.
Pole #3 T-14 with round entrances. Two decoys sitting on porches 32' from residence.
2019
ASY male with SY female arrived 05/25/2019. I can not prove but I think he is the SY male that was here last year. He went to same Troyer Vertical gourd he favored last year. They have been here every day since arriving including today (05/30/2019).

One SY Male stayed 30+ days but was unable to get one of many females to stay and nest. A couple other SY males tried for a week or so and also failed.

The PMCA depends on memberships, donations, and profits from products sold in our store to fund their research and education efforts. I'm looking for a pdf file that has instructions on how and when to play the "Dawnsong" and "Day Time Chatter" CD's.
I have read that you play the "Dawnsong" for two hours before sunrise and one hour before sunset, or play it all day.
What are the latest guidelines?

- Martin Colony History: six pair in 2014, have grown to 52 pairs in 2017.
I consider them both advertising. As martins are gregarious, the will respond to it any time they hear it. When I was looking to start a colony, I played both alternatively all day. If you are looking for a more natural presentation, dawn song it typically sung before sunrise and the daytime chatter during the day. Hope that helps.

We've pasted the text from both the Dawnsong and Daytime Chatter CD booklets below; the most beneficial time to play the Dawnsong is during the early morning hours-from about 4AM till 6 or 7AM, but you can also play it during the day if you are not using the Daytime Chatter CD as well. If you are using both CD's have the Dawnsong switch over to the Daytime Chatter around 6-7AM, and then this can be played all day. You can view the current Scout-Arrival Map here; https://www.purplemartin.org/purple-mar ... 46/timing/ You can start playing the attraction cd's a few weeks before the subadults arrive but make sure to keep the entrances closed if you have other species, either the native Tree Swallows and bluebirds, or the non-native House Sparrow and European Starlings interested in the housing or have only one or two entrances open that you can easily monitor. When to Use the Dawnsong CD
This CD works best if played during the hours when adult males normally sing their dawnsong (i.e., between 4:00 - 6:00 a.m., in the darkness preceding dawn), but it will also work if played during daylight hours. And it works best during the time when subadult martins are migrating through your area. Playing this tape during the 4-6 week time window when adult martins migrate through your area will be less productive since the majority of adult martins nest at the same site year after year, and rarely switch to a new site. Adults will come and investigate the dawnsong, but will move on quickly. Typically, only the subadult martins, looking for their first nesting site, will stay and use your housing.
To determine the correct time frame for playing the dawnsong CD in your area, refer to the Purple Martin Migration-timing Map on page 5. Start playing this CD about 4 weeks after the first adult martins normally begin arriving in your area (i.e., 4 weeks after the dates shown on the map). Since the migration of subadults lasts about 4-6 weeks in the northern half of the range and 10-12 weeks in the southern half, there is a very broad time frame in which to successfully play the tape. For example: if you live somewhere along the April 1st line shown on the map, you can play the dawnsong from May 1st through June 30th. If you live near the February 1st line, play the dawnsong from March 1st through May 31st. Since martins can arrive and nest as late as June, even in the south, you can keep playing the dawnsong through June.
How to Play the Dawnsong CD
For best results, this CD should be played as loudly as possible without distortion, with the speakers aimed skyward from the general vicinity of your martin housing. Underneath the martin housing is best, but from an open window of your house or garage will also work. Portable “boom boxes” or home stereo speakers work best. Since the song works best if played before dawn, partially wrap your CD player in plastic to protect it from the condensation of morning dew or drizzle if it is set outside. Set your player to repeat, so that the CD will play continuously until you shut it off. The more you play the dawnsong between the hours of 4:00 - 6:00 a.m., and the more consecutive mornings, the better your chances of attracting migrant subadults. You may be able to connect your CD player to the timer so it comes on by itself. You can also play the dawnsong CD in the evening, for one or two hours before sunset. Playing the dawnsong in the middle of the day is probably the least effective time for attracting prospective tenants. If you can’t manage to play the dawnsong before sunrise, play it as early in the morning as you can.
Dawnsong will not scare newly-arriving martins away. They will act confused, not being able to see a martin making the sounds, but they will soon settle down. Leave the CD player on. Once one or more martins have been attracted and begin spending the night at your housing, you can cease playing the dawnsong, or you can continue to play it regularly throughout the time for subadult arrivals.
Daytime Chatter CD
When to Use this CD
This CD works best when played during the hours that martins are most active around their housing — early morning and evening, but it can be played any time of the day. It works best when subadult martins are migrating through your area. Playing this recording early in the martin season, when only adult martins are migrating through you area, will be less productive since most adult martins nest at the same site each year and rarely switch to a new site. Adults will come and investigate the daytime chatter, but then move on. Typically, only subadult martins, looking for their first nesting site, will stay and use your housing.
To determine the correct time window for playing the daytime CD in your area to attract subadults, refer to the Purple Martin migration-timing map on page 6. Depending on your latitude, start playing this CD either 4, 5, or 6 weeks after the first adult martins normally begin arriving in your area (4 weeks after the dates shown on the map if you live in the northern 3rd of the martins’ breeding range, 5 weeks after the dates on the map if you live in the central 3rd, and 6 weeks after adult arrival date if you live in the southern 3rd.) For example: if you live near the April 1st section shown on the map, play the daytime chatter from May 1st through June 30th. If you live near the March 1st section, play the recording from April 7th through June 25th. If you live near the February 1st line, play the recording from March 15th through June 21st. As you can see, there is a very broad time window in which to play the Daytime Chatter CD and successfully attract breeding martins. The time window is 8 weeks long in the north, 10 weeks long in the middle of the continent, and 13 weeks long in the south, but it could be played until the end of June in any range.
How to Play this CD

This section contains instructions on how to broadcast the vocalizations with audio equipment of various types, such as boomboxes and home stereo systems. If you decide to buy audio equipment specifically for playing this recording, be certain that it has both continuous playback and timer features.
