Wondering about martin migration now that our birds have gone? Watch the movements of 28 GPS/Geolocator tagged Purple Martins as they migrate from our HQ in Erie, PA to the Amazon and back.

In cooperation with our international partners, we're using this data to target habitat conservation efforts. The PMCA is working at home and abroad to ensure the future of Purple Martins.

That was absolutely amazing!!!!! Well done.
Ride of the Valkyries was totally appropriate.
My ? ....Did red dot cross the gulf to the Yucatan and back across the gulf, then back to the Yucatan in one season? Or did red dot spend the winter on the Yucatan? Looks like red dot wanted to visit New Orleans as an afterthought...

In an earlier post you said that your home state was illinois....where abouts? I've noticed an uptick in interest in purple martins here in Illinois. I hope it's more than curiosity.

Again....loved the video.

We're investigating some of the events like that one to determine if it's a result of the equinox or shading on the geolocator or if it was truly a return flight. Most of the data affected by those factors are automatically filtered out, but some are getting a second look.

Oh yeah!!

Summers at Carlyle lake!
Decent martin area. Still mostly farms and small communities.

Thanks again for the video...looks like a lot of work went into that. I must have watched it a half a dozen times just to follow different dots. Some birds are all over the place, some seem to stay in one area. Fascinating.

Spent last Christmas Day in the Panama Canal and the ship was swarmed by thousands of martins on the return trip from the Amazon --truly a great experience for a martin lover.

That's very cool. Do you happen to have any video? We'd be very interested!

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

That was neat to watch. Once they get moving they really go. Interesting to see they all crossed the Gulf. Amazing how far south they go too.

Martin Colony History: Mom n Dad had a plastic 12 unit martin house with some martins as long as I can remember. In 2013 they had 1 pair. I don't think they fledged any. I then started learning how to take care of martins and in 2014 we took that house down and put up a Troyer 18 gourd rack. We had 7 pair with 28 fledged. That summer I built a T-14 (I was only 12). I was also given 4 natural gourds that I hung beneath the T-14. In 2015, we had 23 pair although only 22 pair fledged young. They fledged 88 young. In 2016, we had 36 pair, 210 eggs, 163 hatched, 149 fledge!! One pair fledged 2 broods. In 2017, I had 36 pair with 35 fledging young. They laid 204 eggs, hatched 155, and fledged 152.

WOW!!!!! Impressive!! I like that 100 times over!! Very good work, Joe!!!
