Carthage, Mo Roost Report

Martin Colony History: Mom n Dad had a plastic 12 unit martin house with some martins as long as I can remember. In 2013 they had 1 pair. I don't think they fledged any. I then started learning how to take care of martins and in 2014 we took that house down and put up a Troyer 18 gourd rack. We had 7 pair with 28 fledged.That summer I built a T-14 (I was only 12). I was also given 4 natural gourds that I hung beneath the T-14. In 2015, we had 23 pair although only 22 pair fledged young. They fledged 88 young. In 2016, we had 36 pair, 210 eggs, 163 hatched, 149 fledge!! One pair fledged 2 broods. In 2017, I had 36 pair with 35 fledging young. They laid 204 eggs, hatched 155, and fledged 152.

My friend and part of my family visited the roost in Carthage, MO last night. Unfortunately, someone cut all the roost trees down this summer. :x We saw around 1000 martins maybe but couldn't figure out where they actually roosted as you could see little groups of them here and there but never a large group all circling one group of trees. I hope they find a nice location to roost in soon so that the roost can get back to its normal size.

I actually just looked at the radar data from the last few days for Carthage. It looks like the birds might be somewhere northwest of their old roost location. If someone would like to hunt for it, I can try to get some specific gps coordinates form the radar.

I would be interested in having those since our family chiropractor is in Carthage, we are there fairly frequently and could maybe try hunting it down again. :)

These are estimated locations from the last few days. Keep in mind that the radar cannot get exact locations since it doesn't pick the birds up until they're flying. The numbers represent how many days ago the radar indicated the location. The real truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

We were in that area a lot! I wish there were more birds as that would make finding it a lot easier. I will definitely tell you if we look again.

Martin Colony History: 2016 - 22 Pair

For the past few mornings, the radar I am looking at indicates a slight ring which could be a roost. The center of the ring appears to be right at Hwy. 44 due south of Carthage.

2010 Thru 2013 - Moved-Tried to start new colony
2009 - 46 pair, 217 eggs, 178 fledged

Thanks Tim! I am hoping to go some time again, but I'm not certain if it will work.

I think it is sad that the roost was bulldozed away. Martins had been using this sight for a number of years.
With Purple Martins being a federally protected bird, it should be against the law to destroy their roosting
sights. I would be ashamed of myself whoever was responsible for doing it.
