Can anyone provide information as to the process of making my colony available for banding? Appreciate the insight. Thank You. Richard

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

You would have to locate a bander that has the Federal license & permits to do Martins. According to what I was told, by a local bander, they have to get a special certificate & permit for each species of bird they want to band in PA. They will quote you the cost of banding your colony.

I'd contact the PA Game Commission & ask if there are any Bird Banders in your area.

Martin Colony History: 24 Super and Excluder Gourds on two gourd racks, all SREH. Full occupancy. My philosophy is to maximize fledge % with existing cavities rather than adding gourds to grow colony, thus providing opportunities for new colony expansion. Fledge over 100 nestlings yearly from 24 gourds. Band nestlings in cooperation with state university. 2019 Adendum: Reduced colony size to 12 gourds to focus on more intensive management regimen.

Check with your local Audubon Society. They will have contacts. That is how I first began. I do not personally have a bander's perit. I just provide the birds. A master bander's permit will be needed, although another trained bander may band under that person's permit with permission. The USGS will require authorization for any auxillary bands in addition to the official aluminum bands that they supply. They will also need you to provide a rationale for the banding. They have tightened the approval process for the permits. II got the impression that if others in the area are currently banding, the USGS is trying to avoid duplication.
