Thank you for the words of encouragement!!! Nothing to really report as of yet. Had one PM land on rack this morning but I had all the holes plugged in attempts to vacate a pair of tree swallows from the gourd rack over to a shepards hook which I believe worked. All 36 gourds are open now. Next 2 weeks will determine my fate.

- Martin Colony History: 2016- Some visitors on my Trendsetter 12, no nesting pairs yet.
2017- More visitors, still no nesting pairs yet.
2018- Added Troyer Horizontal gourds and moved house to more open location. One nesting pair of subadults! 2 eggs, 1 egg hatched.
2019- added Gemini gourd rack. 2 pairs, 10 eggs, 10 hatched.
Had one subadult circle around for 10 minutes or so then left, had a sighting of three purple martins a few weeks ago for 5-10 minutes. No takers yet. Have the dawn song playing four hours every morning. Thinking about smearing mud on the house and gourds as I've heard from some that that works. Last year we had most of our visitors in June, but hoping we can somehow get a nesting pair established. So far my site seems to attract a decent amount of visitors, but no takers yet.

This is my first post. I'm about 15 miles west of Greenporter, on the North Fork of Long Island. There is an active colony only 1700 feet away on Town park property. I've been past there daily only to see no activity until two days ago. There are about 20 birds there, and it was so exciting to see them! My setup is brand new, there are two decoys and I'm playing dawnsong every morning. I did lower it to straighten out the one decoy who was a little overeager by looking straight up into the sky for company! 
Now I wait and hope.

Well I figured I would give an update.
I currently have one pair of SY birds that laid there first egg today. I'm absolutely thrilled!!!
Wow what a roller coaster of emotions this year. I was just about to bring down all three gourd racks (not really) on May 30th in frustration that my male that showed up on May 17 could not keep a female at my site. I simply chalked it up that my site MUST not be conducive to martins. Then on May 31st I watched both birds at 7:00am make repeated trips to the beach to gather nesting materials and this lasted for about 5 days! No nest building or green leaves (that I witnessed) going into the nest the last two days but I knew they were spending the night. They would fly in without a single cher-cher and immediately go into their gourd not making a peep.
Today the female didn't come out until 9:30 am and the male just sat on the gourd the whole time. I just checked the rack today at 2:00 pm and found my first egg with 3 or 4 leaves in the nest as well. I'm just hoping they can successfully fledge a few young this year.
I have another SY male trying to attract a female. I'm hoping he doesn't cause problems for my pair. Time will tell.

Congrats on the pair and egg(s) Mitch. Good news is I think there are still SY's migrating through this area. As of two days ago I had one SY pair and another lone SY male hanging around. Yesterday I had more SY's show up and this morning there were 8 here building nest in 4 different cavities. Needless to say I am thrilled about that. No way of knowing if they are migrating still or got displaced from somewhere else. So you could still add to your count as well.

- Martin Colony History: Mom n Dad had a plastic 12 unit martin house with some martins as long as I can remember. In 2013 they had 1 pair. I don't think they fledged any. I then started learning how to take care of martins and in 2014 we took that house down and put up a Troyer 18 gourd rack. We had 7 pair with 28 fledged.That summer I built a T-14 (I was only 12). I was also given 4 natural gourds that I hung beneath the T-14. In 2015, we had 23 pair although only 22 pair fledged young. They fledged 88 young. In 2016, we had 36 pair, 210 eggs, 163 hatched, 149 fledge!! One pair fledged 2 broods. In 2017, I had 36 pair with 35 fledging young. They laid 204 eggs, hatched 155, and fledged 152.
Go Mitch! I have always puzzled why you haven't got a colony yet. Several false starts, but I really hope its for real this year. You deserve it. So happy for you that some are trying. Keep us updated, please!

I'm thrilled w the activity this early in June. Normally my season seems to start around July 15 when the pre migratory roost about a mile away starts to
form. Then most my visitors are hatching year birds drawn in by the dawnsong. For a while there I was starting to tell myself that my location just was not conducive to martins. I sit in the middle of an 11 acre parcel that has very large trees on the perimeter of the property and a 1-1/2 acre pond in front of the house. The trees across the pond are at least 300 feet away though. Even if I just end up with this one pair I will be thrilled!! I was close to taking everything down out of frustration. Glad I didn't.
I put mallard duck nesting tubes out on my pond this year in order for the hens to have a successful clutch hatch. Last year I had four clutches destroyed by predators but this year they are on there third successful hatch using the nesting tubes. My problem now is that within a 7-10 days every duckling disappears. I know I have some huge snapping turtles in my pond and I'm thinking it's about time I eliminate them from the property. I also heard hypothermia is the number 1 cause of duckling's not making it. Any duck experts out there?

Mitch I think Glynn has ducks! He raises mallards too! I have wood ducks but their on the water! Not sure what happens with them! I can only hope they make it! So happy about your colony getting started!! Good luck!

If you are ever in the area you can get quite a show just from shore as the boat ride is already sold out for this year. Having 6-7 birds here at once is such a thrill!!! Just when I was pretty much at an all time low, I had an amazing encounter this morning. I had gone out in the backyard to do some gardening when my timer turned on my vocals at 10am. Within minutes I had a visitor. It made several passes and amazing circles and low and behold she landed on the perching rods on the roof of my house. She was a beautiful and quite vocal sy female. She set and flew around for a good half hour before leaving. I think there was at least another with her, but she was the only one that came in to check out my site. Sure hope she returns and brings a male and others along. It was an amazing half hour.

Our club has a super colony near by and the latest the first egg has been laid is July 3rd or 4th. I can't remember exactly but I know it was the first part of July. Our roost typically peeks around August 15th and the numbers slowly go down and we end boat rides August 31st. I currently have one nest with 3 eggs and have been watching green leaves go into another gourd just below my nesting pair but have not checked for eggs yet. I generally have 3-4 single SY males hanging around but seem short on the females. I may lower the rack today and take a closer look.

In 2016, we had 36 pair, 210 eggs, 163 hatched, 149 fledge!! One pair fledged 2 broods. In 2017, I had 36 pair with 35 fledging young. They laid 204 eggs, hatched 155, and fledged 152.
Way to go on a probable second pair!!!!! I believe you'll have martins again next year.
