Our school went from 5 to 15 in one day!!!
We have a 12 gourd rack at my elementary school in central PA. I was watching all of the posts about the martins not coming back, and my students and I were seeing the same thing here. However, overnight they must have poured in. We had 5 for about a week....and we just counted at least 15 at lunch time. They are fighting like crazy, too. The same thing actually happened at my house overnight, also. I had 9 pair at my house last year and 9 pair at the school. I think we might be overflowing when the SY's return.

- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
Congrats
. I bet the kids were excited.
Many of us were getting worried something had happened in South America to many, but they proved us wrong & here they are again. It seems, via the reports, that they are showing up in groups this year. I would guess they held out down south waiting for better weather before pushing on north.
I had 3, then 4, then 3, then 4, then 5, then 4, then 5, then 6....now have 10. I know some stop over, at my site, on their way further north, but no idea where.
Doug/Fombell has a SY Male. I have a SY Female.
Overflow is good. That means we are doing a good job at being landlords.
