I experimented with three out of eleven gourds facing the pole. All three are occupied. I think they are a little safer and I think they feel safer. Four pair chose outside entrances.

Martin Colony History: Started at unsuitable location in 2008. Many lessons learned since. Two tentative locations: Rogers International School and the "Fish Church" (downtown.) One pair in 2015; no fledglings though. No pairs 2016.

This is very interesting! I would really love to hear more/updates. I have hawks and owls and since site is at a school I cannot monitor closely/scare them off. This seems like a partial solution - it seems they would have more trouble reaching in or swooping to grab them.

Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas

I tried this on 2 gourds for 1 year, they remained empty

I tried one last year and it was occupied. They had to maneuver a little more, but handled it nicely. There were five more unused ones the pair could have chosen.
