Have a small hawk that is causing Martins and myself problems. I usually have 15-20 pairs by now but only see about 5 pairs.
Any suggestions
Buckeye Nut
getting rid of hawk?
If you live outside the city limits, shoot a 12 gauge in his direction. He will move on & hunt somewhere else.
Don't have to shoot him, he will realize there is danger & leave the area.

- Martin Colony History: have not had martins for last 20 yrs. trying to re establish a colony
2018 1 asy pair fledged 2
If it's a sparrow hawk the martins should be able to hold their own. If it's a coopers or sharp shined they can be deadly.

Here we use a marine air horn; very effective. We have a resident Cooper's who likes to ambush at dusk. She and I have had an on-going battle the last few years and I think the Martins and I are winning. I have to be in the yard every evening with my trusty air horn (and a glass of wine). My being present does not deter her in any way, but the air horn certainly does.
What about Merlin's ?
2009. 98 eggs, 66 hatch, 61 fledged.
2010. 114 eggs, 89 hatch,70 fledged.

- Martin Colony History: 24 Super and Excluder Gourds on two gourd racks, all SREH. Full occupancy. My philosophy is to maximize fledge % with existing cavities rather than adding gourds to grow colony, thus providing opportunities for new colony expansion. Fledge over 100 nestlings yearly from 24 gourds. Band nestlings in cooperation with state university. 2019 Adendum: Reduced colony size to 12 gourds to focus on more intensive management regimen.
If is anything other than a starling or a sparrow, you cannot touch it. You cannot get rid of it. You can try to discourage it only.If in doubt, get a bird book or google it. No excuse for not knowing what your target is or federal laws.

I have heard of some landlords with hawk problems using Tube Man Inflatable Air Dancers near their colony with some success. Another unusual method to deter hawks is to place a scarecrow in a lawn chair under the gourd rack or housing. Presence in the area and air horns may also work.
