Nice, Kyler!!!
I've heard gourds is the way to go, but I like the looks of the houses so much better that I've been sticking to houses. (I know it's not for me but for them), but I have to give houses a try and see how it works out.
Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
Kyler, love the photos. Looks like your season is off to a great start! You've really put a lot of work and thought into your site. It's very heartening to know that someone your age is so dedicated to helping purple martins thrive. Can't believe how windy it is here in Kansas, and it seems the farther west you drive, the worse it gets. These martins are tough little birds. Our season is picking up here in eastern Kansas, had a pair spend the night last night. Keeping our fingers crossed. Hoping to get some good photos this year, too.
In the meantime, watching the Blue Birds busy with nest building. My husband and I think of you every time we travel to Denver to visit our daughter - and pass by Wheat Jesus on the interstate. Hope you have a great season! --Michelle in Topeka
Martin Colony History: 2016 Informed landlord now Have 2 pair returning from 2015 That is a miracle. Hoping for a very successful year, sparrow population on decline. First house was plastic with crescent holes Had martins within a few days. Ignorant landlord gradually lost them Then got Trio House and still lost most of them. Lots of sparrows
Great pics Kyler. Is there anything in this world more beautiful?
Looks like you are going to have a productive season.
I've had ASYs in & out but even Uno has yet to spent the night. Today for the first time he checked out one of the gourds. At first I thought it was another ASY but after entering a couple of times he flew to the Trio & entered "his" apartment so I am reasonably sure it was Uno. He's been in & out more today than previously but so far by himself.
I have no worries that my sight will have several birds this year. Just waiting for those SYs to fill up the gourds. And actually surprised that Uno entered a gourd. Wonder if he is going to go for "bigamy" raising 2 nests.

Tony,
Yes but I my area no one else offers them so I'm trying to get them started. I also like the look of the houses but I'm all about what they like and not to much what I like anymore.
Dave,
Thanks I know this is your year. Good luck!
Michelle,
Thanks so much. Yes I have put a lot of work this offseason. I was at the point I was working on the houses and gourds Intill 4:00 to about 10:00 at night when it was getting closer to when martins were going to be here. I love these birds and know I'm pretty much the main landlord in Colby. I'm getting calls all the time from people at the beginning of the season to get there houses cleaned out and put up. I'm managing about 6 different colonies that are not even mine. My goal is to get as many fledglings or martins in the air to increase the population in Northwest Kansas. But anyways It would be awesome to meet you some time and you can come by and see my colony some time. Have a good season.
Okie,
I know your colony is going to increase this year. Good luck.
Anthony and Sharon,
Thanks for the nice comments and I hope you both have a great season.
