Saw our first PMs of the season this evening. Two ASY males were on the house at 6 PM. No cavities were open so I went out to drop the house and open a couple. They flew off and haven't been back, so they musta been passing through.
So if you're north of us, you have a couple on their way "home."

- Martin Colony History: 2011: Set up 16 room S&K house.
2012: nothing.
2013: lookers but no takers.
2014: lookers but no takers.
2015: 3 pair nested, 7 fledged.
2016: second year: S&K house is now an 8 room house and added a separate pole with eight Troyer Vertical Gourds. 13 pair nested, 50 fledged.
2017: third year: S&K house is now a 6 room house (blocked attic access). Same Troyer gourds.

- Martin Colony History: Colony established May 20, 2017 after three unsuccessful years. Persistent and aggressive Tree Swallows plagued the site, but beyond learning - and practicing - to control them, was the return in 2017 of a 2016-SY-M previously unable to find a mate. As a handsome ASY-M, he brought along two females and a swagger that soon put the Tree Swallow issue to rest. As the anchor pair, he and his mate hatched all six of their eggs into fat and healthy babies into what settled in to be a three-pair, flourishing new colony with up to 11 birds total, including 3 SY-M trouble makers.

Had an ASY-M here (about 100 miles east of you) about 10 a.m. this morning, and like yours, he was gone in a matter of a minute or less. Opened a couple gourds, but clearly he was a traveler.

My neighbor had a pair of martins at his colony near Kirkersville (Licking Co) on Sunday.

- Martin Colony History: I have had my martin colony on the dam of one of my ponds for nine years. The colony has grown each year, but I am now concentrating on helping friends and acquaintances who have shown interests in martins. My colony consists of three T-14's with 8 Troyer gourds attatched to each T-14, a Troyer gourd rack with 12 gourds, and another gourd rack with 18 Troyer gourds for a total of 96 nest cavities. I am having serious predation issues with hawks and owls and am experimenting with various hawk guards and "screens". Established successful supplemental feeding the last few seasons and have had a blast flipping mostly meal worms and some crickets. Faculty from Ohio University are using my colony as a research site to study parasites that target cavity nesting birds. In exchange for access to my bird trail nest boxes and martin housing, they are banding all birds involved in their study.
Strange arrival days in southeastern Ohio, and from what I am hearing, numbers seem to be down in other areas of Ohio also. Only one pair of ASY birds have shown up at this colony near Athens. (36 pairs with successful fledging last summer)
Trying hard to "keep the faith" and be patient!

As expected, our PM's returned shortly after yours. Keep the faith.
