Last year had to take down gourd rack..........put up new lonestar house......gave gourd rack to neighbor across the way.Martins visit my lonestar from his gourd rack but it seems to me they are having a difficult time entering the lonestar with srehs.I had one female who entered the house, but fought to exit.I had to let house down to let her out.Question is has anyone experienced issues with martins and lonestar.Or is it maybe they just want to visit and look inside.

- Martin Colony History: six pair in 2014, have grown to 52 pairs in 2017.
It is very common for visiting martins to peek in and then back out. Just for your peace of mind you could check the opening size. It should be 1 3/16 of an inch. Once they want to go in, they will.
2011- first year trying, a few visitors.
2012-One ASY pair, raised two young, lots of subby visitors. So thankfull.
2013-daily subby visits.
2014-Six SY pairs
2015-18 pair, 83 fledglings
2016-36 pair, 147 fledglings

- Martin Colony History: 2009-2015-Helped to manage Raleigh site, 36 cavities
2016- 33 pairs at Raleigh site, 1 pair at home site.
2017- 34 pairs at Raleigh site, 3 pairs + extra SYs at home site
2018- 33 pairs at Raleigh site, 5 pairs + extra SYs at home site
2019 - 32 pairs at Raleigh site, 7 pairs at home site, 2 pairs at new Holly Springs park site
We use a Lonestar Goliad out at our public site. The entrances are flush to the floor. The martins have no trouble entering and exiting. Give it some time, and see how they adapt. It wouldn't hurt to measure the entrances with a no-go gauge. As mentioned before, they should be 1 - 3/16" at the middle.

- Martin Colony History: I have been exposed to purple martin sounds in utero when my mother went out to get my father away from his martin colony.
I played around the martin colony every summer and watched as my father maintained his colony. In the late 50's until the 70's he did not notice European Starlings in south Texas.
When old enough, I helped maintain his colony. My primary task was eliminating English House Sparrows with a 1956 Benjamin 317 .177 air rifle.
When I settled into my own home, I started my first colony with an original Trio Castle and Trio Grandpa. When I moved again, I did not put up any martin houses. Frustration with European Starlings in the Southeast US was overwhelming.
Found PMCA Forum and learned about modern enlarged compartments and SREHs.
Inherited my father's last martin house, a Trio Grandma, modified it to modern specifications and have had good results since then.
Be sure to test the crescent entrances with a Go NoGo gauge like John Miller recommends. No less than 1 3/16" and no greater than 1 7/32".
