This is my 3rd year trying to attract purple martins. Is there a average period of years before your get your first nesting pair. What is the longest time that anyone has heard of someone trying to get martins before they got a nesting pair? I still have yet to see a martin of any kind this year. The TS and BB are back though and luckily they look to be making use of my BB boxes that i have placed near my PM set ups. It is very reassuring to read the post on the purple Martin forum in reading where people are getting their first pair or seeing their matriarchs come back. I hope to get to that stage one day soon I hope. Until then I'll just keep managing to keep the tree swallowed and blue birds out. JHCox

Martin Colony History: Started with 2 pair in 2014 - 7 eggs -7 fledged

I tried for 7 years before I got my first nesting pair. I have heard of as long as 28 years before a colony began. I know that it is not easy to just wait and watch but after you have done as much as you could to make your site ready for martins it just comes down to patience and a little luck.
I hope that you get your colony started this year.

Martin Colony History: Colony established May 20, 2017 after three unsuccessful years. Persistent and aggressive Tree Swallows plagued the site, but beyond learning - and practicing - to control them, was the return in 2017 of a 2016-SY-M previously unable to find a mate. As a handsome ASY-M, he brought along two females and a swagger that soon put the Tree Swallow issue to rest. As the anchor pair, he and his mate hatched all six of their eggs into fat and healthy babies into what settled in to be a three-pair, flourishing new colony with up to 11 birds total, including 3 SY-M trouble makers.

Good luck from another PM landlord wannabe; this will be my 4th year and nary a nesting PM the first three.

Tennessee, and still haven't seen a PM this season? That does sound odd.

Watched all the Scout Reports, but still not seen a PM this year in my area (SW Ohio).

Hang in there, I feel your pain. :-(

I put up a house in April 2012 and didn't get a pair until 2015. I wonder how much easier it would be to attract martins if all the neglected housing you see wasn't covered with sparrows and starlings but instead covered with martins!

Yes luv ya purple that is very true there are so many neglected martin houses and gourd racks in the area around where I live. And it seems to me that it would be better to not have them up at all if all your going to do is let them go to waist and allow TS BB HS and Starlings to take them over. I can't even find a purple martin landlord in close proximity to where I live toeven go look at their colony to see and learn from them. But I am determined to stay vigil and keep the HS and Starlings amd other native species out of my gourd racks and S&K house. I will repeat patience is truly a virtue. Thanks for your words of encouragement JHCox
