It has been a long wait, but they are back. A male and a female! As all of you can imagine it was a very long day for me at work, knowing that these purple beauties were waiting for me here at home. Keep your eye on the sky buckeyes! They are here!

- Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.
Awesome news!! This weekend there will be more and hopefully no work.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Thank you Dave and Doug, How did you know I was dancing? While I was at work I got a text msg from home with the news of their arrival, and I have been dancing all day! I just came in from feeding them. They were off flying but not many insects out on this cool day so they were happy for the hand out. - Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

- Martin Colony History: Colony established May 20, 2017 after three unsuccessful years. Persistent and aggressive Tree Swallows plagued the site, but beyond learning - and practicing - to control them, was the return in 2017 of a 2016-SY-M previously unable to find a mate. As a handsome ASY-M, he brought along two females and a swagger that soon put the Tree Swallow issue to rest. As the anchor pair, he and his mate hatched all six of their eggs into fat and healthy babies into what settled in to be a three-pair, flourishing new colony with up to 11 birds total, including 3 SY-M trouble makers.

- Martin Colony History: 2011: Set up 16 room S&K house.
2012: nothing.
2013: lookers but no takers.
2014: lookers but no takers.
2015: 3 pair nested, 7 fledged.
2016: second year: S&K house is now an 8 room house and added a separate pole with eight Troyer Vertical Gourds. 13 pair nested, 50 fledged.
2017: third year: S&K house is now a 6 room house (blocked attic access). Same Troyer gourds.
That's GREAT news! We're just a titch north, so we're getting more antsy as we watch the PM's march slowly towards us. We saw three Tree Swallows on the gourd rack perches this morning and were pretty excited for the minute or two that it took to figure out what they were. No cavities are open yet so the TS's are just perching up there. In the meantime they're checking out the other houses and super gourds that are down lower to the ground. We expect the PM's to arrive by the end of this month and we're ready for them. (I suspect there are PM's closer to us than we know and wish more people knew they could post in the arrival study.)
