Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Yes! A female is my first one home this year! I did my idiot twirl and wave and in the weirdest excited voice that I only have at this moment each year I told her, "You're here, you're here! Mama is here!" She was silent but did loop around and circle right above me about 25 feet above based on my house height. They are happy to be back. Now I have some HOSP yet to rid... Gotta go.

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

Martin Colony History: 22 year landlord, 14 at current residence..offering 9 racks and a homemade T-8 for 166 total cavities. 160 Pair in 2018 Racks consist of a Deluxe 12, AAA 16, Starburst 16, 2 K-18 Series, Super 24, 2 Gemini, Multi-purpose/two trio’s/4gourds and a T-8..Great hobby to be involved in..

Congrats Deb! My first was a female also (3/3/17)..she was here for 2 and a half weeks before a male finally showed.. Have around 10 here now..have a great season!
22 year landlord..9 Rack Systems for 2018 and my home built T-8 for a total of 166 cavities..160 pair in 2018 ..SUPER COLONY!!! Love You Bev... Fan of those St. Louis Cardinals!!!!!

Later yesterday afternoon a male showed! They looked cozy sitting on a porch together.

Martin Colony History: 2016 Informed landlord now Have 2 pair returning from 2015 That is a miracle. Hoping for a very successful year, sparrow population on decline.
First house was plastic with crescent holes Had martins within a few days. Ignorant landlord gradually lost them
Then got Trio House and still lost most of them. Lots of sparrows

2016 Started with 2 pair, 1 pair abandoned after HOSP destroyed eggs
1 pair= 6 eggs, 6 fledged
2017 1 pair so far, But they abandoned before nest complete for ?reason? Now Bridless and joined the Wannabes
2018 One pair ASY male SY female 5 eggs, 5 fledged

Martin Colony History: First pair in 2009 after 28 years of trying. 3 pairs 2010, 17 pairs 2011 and 35-45 pairs since. Many additional colonies are now springing up around mine in an area once completely void of Martins. I offer 50 compartments at my site consisting of primarily Excluder II gourds on Gemini racks. Also a wooden T-14. I utilize electric fence type predator guards on the base of the poles. Supplemental feeding is crucial in maintaining my colony. I platform feed throughout the season as needed. My site tends to be a stop over point for additional birds as they migrate further north.

Supplemental feeding plays a major role in Western Pennsylvania. Finally got my 1st pair in 2009 after 28 years of effort. The colony has grown quickly to 45 pairs that I care for. Many new colonies have now sprung up around me in the past few years as well. Where there was none.... there is many.

Thank you everyone! There will most likely never be any filming since I'm out in the boonies and usually I am home alone when I see that first one. However, I get so focused on and entranced by #1 that I'd still do the weirdness and wouldn't even notice taping. So it might make YouTube someday.

I have 3 pair here now. I pulled in the other day and greeted them. They hovered. I was like...ok...be right back. It was a grey cold day which followed sunshine the day before. I came out with eggs and flippin spoon and did my most favorite activity on this earth. Yeah well maybe not my most favored activity...no, yep, it's right up there. They all ate immediately. Not tons like when things are in dire straits but the know how and memory is there. Amazing. The next day was cold and constant rain. I didn't want them out in it. The morning after that they were thrilled I came with breakfast. Just love those special birds.

I have four birds today (3M, 1F). I am hoping for more nesting pairs this season (32 nests 2016) with a 6 gourd rack added this week.

Have over 60 birds here now...been feeding scrambled eggs last few days..got them trained to eat off a large board now, so no more flipping..

Martin Colony History: 1 gourd rack with 24 gourd capacity. 2018, my 11th year hosting martins.
18 pair in 2017.

Congratulations DebA. Isn't interesting that the HOSP's show up as soon as the martins arrive?
Lousy cold and wet here in Lawrence also. Should be nice this weekend.
