Noob in coastal Alabama 1st attempt

This season will be my first attempt to attract the birdies. Wish me luck. My "open" area is about as small as recommended. I have a 12 room condo ready with the half moon openings , porch dividers and perch rails. I spotted some pine straw piled up the other day, stopped to get some and found that it was all cypress instead. Smells just like pine only softer with no sharp pointed ends. Need to get my decoys mounted an start some music. Checked here to ask for good luck and noticed that some in FL and LA are already seeing scouts(?). I am so hopeful as I am sure most noobs are. I will try not to pester too often with my new found enthusiasm.
welcome- i live not too far in Molino Fl. I dont usually see martins until feb... crescent doors are good-but the newer ones can be better against wing entrapment.. the thing with having these birds is you learn something new all the time- so it all takes time... We have been doing this about 11 years and only get about 10 pairs, but then we only have 12 gourds. I wish you the best of luck- they are a very smart and friendly bird- you will enjoy their song and antics... we are all here to help if needed

I was wondering when to start playing the dawnsong cd. If they come through here mid Feb. should I begin around the 5th? Just by the name I assume " on time" should be sunrise but for how long....noon or till almost sunset? I have put together a rig on a timer that can turn itself on and off daily. My neighbors should love it
