i have the song magnet to use next spring to get my colony started. however, i also bought the daytime chatter cd from the pmca store and want to know the best type of player to use with an outdoor horn speaker. i plan on ripping the cd to mp3 so i can use a digital device like an old smart phone, but am not sure how much power it will push to the horn speaker. any help would be appreciated.

Back 3 or 4 years ago when I first got started, I ran an underground landscape lighting cable to the horn speaker I have on top of the martin house, to an amp and then to my pc. I did this so I could play the cd with my pc and have the pc turn it on and off. Some where here on the forum it tells how under attraction methods I think. This works pretty slick.

i have tried playing thru a bluetooth speaker, but its just not loud enough. I was hoping someone could detail what type amp and speaker works best outdoors. i am close enough to my garage for electric, if that helps

Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

I use a home stereo speaker and stereo with a repeat on it and timer! Set and forget it!! lol I use a bungee strap to trap the speaker to the poles high as I can reach! Cover your speaker with plastic bag. Run your speaker wire to the shed where the stereo is in my shop! This may be the redneck way to do it but it works! Goodluck!

thanx for the input. i was hoping i could use an mp3 player, something simple and small, but i do have an unused stereo receiver without speakers, so i could buy a horn type for outdoors and hook it to that. now, how so i play the dawn song? do i have to buy a cd player? or can i attach an old smartphone or ipod to play the song. that's the part i'm unsure about. the song magnet worked very good in the beginning, and i even had pm visitors for about 15 minutes in July flying around my gourd rack. but its very finicky, sometimes not playing at all. that's why i'm trying another way

Hey dubluv,
My daughter took an old I-Pod and recorded the Dawn Song from 4:00a.m. To 6:00a.m. And Daytime Chatter from 2:00p.m. To 4:00p.m. All on a continuous 24 hour recording. I just turn it on and it keeps running till I turn it off. She gave me the PC speakers to go with it and they seem to be Loud enough. I keep everything in a modified Dog House ( front and sides with screen ) so it doesn't get wet. I set the Dog House on an outside table next to my shop, about 75 ft. From my Colony.
It really works Great.!!

Steve,

I did a little more research and I bought a pyle pha25 amp. You need to supply a 12vdc source (just a plug in thing like a charger) I bought from radio shack and I used a horn style speaker also from radio shack.

Hello, Please note that your speaker does NOT have to be actually on your martin housing. I have founded three new colonies in NY and PA, all in extremely martin sparse areas. There had been no martins sighted anywhere near for years. The only way I attracted them was by very loud dawnsong playing. In all three cases , I had my powerhorn speaker on a nearby house or barn, not on the martin housing. In one case, the speaker was almost a quarter of a mile from the housing, in the other cases, about 50 to 100 yards away. Bring them in to the general area, and they WILL find your house. best of luck, Peter

Thanx for all the feedback. i realized i can use a 3.5mm to rca split cable to the input on my receiver. i'll update as soon as i get it all together.
