Travis Audubon's wonderful Purple Martin parties start next weekend!

They do a terrific job promoting martins at the annual roost location in Austin - they provide public education, conservation (protecting roost trees from cats, collect any injured martins for care), and even work to clean droppings up in the mornings. We couldn't ask for better Purple Martin Ambassadors than this dedicated group.

I went to this roost location last night (Saturday July 16) and had the most wonderful experience watching 350,000 Purple Martins swoop in over our heads and settle in at their roosting spot. This was a first for me and my jaw was dropped for most of it. I also learned why it's not a good idea to park your car in the flight path, and why umbrellas and hats are suggested.
The people there from Travis Audubon were so very friendly, and approachable. I hope to be able to get back there again this month!
