Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

My season started with Martins returning early (March 31st) due to a warm winter. Only to have to deal with 10 straight days of snow, rain & temps that dropped into the teens at night & never got warm enough to find food during the day. They were all peeking in my windows, lined up on the power lines begging for food. I flipped many crickets & used hand warmers to keep them warm at night. Had I not I think they may have all died.

The weather finally broke April 14th & things were looking good. More Martins had arrived & nest building started April 25th. It was short lived. The weather turned cold again on April 28th with temps too low to find food & we had rain every day for the next 4 days.

On May 1st it was raining & 48 degrees at noon. By now my colony had grown to 22 Martins. At 7 PM I had an extra 11 Martins arrive all at once. They were exhausted, cold, wet & very hungry. They looked beat with wings drooping. I flipped crickets & some of them joined in with my colony. They spent the night. Sadly 2 of the Females from the extra 11 did not survive. The next morning the 9 that survived left, pushed on North. The next several days the temps were warm enough to find food, but we had passing rain showers & high winds. I flipped 300-400 crickets per day to keep them going.

Finally nest building resumed May 11th. Temps remained on the cool side for severals day with passing rain showers. We got 2 days of temps on the upper 60's to low 70's then back to upper 40's low 50's dropping to below freezing at night. It was a pain trying to keep the Martins all feed & warm during this weather rollercoaster. I have gone thru an easy 6000 crickets this season so far.

My Alfa ASY Female was attacked in her nest twice in one day by a young starling. She survived, but never laid eggs. We found bloody poops in her nest, on the balcony & the sidewalk. She went missing several days later. I assume she died :(.

First egg was laid May 23rd & a couple SY Males had arrived. By now I had 13 pair. May 24th the weather changed & temps hit the 90's! for the next 5 days. Early June temps dropped to low 50's day time for a few days then back to the 90's again. It's central PA & our weather is like a rollercoaster here in spring. It can be 90 one day & in the 40's or 50's the next day or even lower with snow.

Egg laying was going well. Nest check on June 11th revealed 15 nests/58 eggs laid.

I had neck surgery June 13th & was away 2 days. Upon arriving home we did a nest check & found a ASY Female dead in her nest. She was laying across the entrance hole just inside the nest. She had 5 eggs due to hatch soon. So I moved them. Put 4 in one nest that had 2 eggs, one of which was bad. The other egg I put in a nest of 5 eggs. They all hatched :). I came home from surgery to find 15 newly hatched chicks.

June 18th Myself & a former board member held a Martin event. 9 people attended & had a hands on experience.

Fast forward to today. My colony counts to date:
15 pair/nests plus 3 extra SY Males. Minus the loss of 2 females. 14 nests with eggs. 60 eggs laid - 22 eggs bad = 38 hatched. 2 chicks died, leaving 36 very fat healthy looking chicks. I have 3 nests with chicks that are starting to peek out. Blowfly larva & mites have been low this year. We changed all nests out around days 4-6.

As far as I know I am the only one with an active colony, other than a couple on Amish farms, in my county. It's a lot of work keeping them going, but so well worth it. It won't be long they will start to fledge & then migration will start & they will be gone until next spring.

Amazing report Toy!
The whole time reading it, I kept thinking "she is the most awesome, dedicated, and caring landlord, for her Martins, and even visiting Martins!"
In addition to tirelessly caring for your Martins under some extreme conditions, you even hosted a Martin event that no doubt raised Purple Martin awareness, and will also very likely result in some new, caring landlords.
Amazing work Toy!

Martin Colony History: 2016 Informed landlord now Have 2 pair returning from 2015 That is a miracle. Hoping for a very successful year, sparrow population on decline.
First house was plastic with crescent holes Had martins within a few days. Ignorant landlord gradually lost them
Then got Trio House and still lost most of them. Lots of sparrows

Ditto Matt Well said
I remember all those posts from PA spending hours flipping crickets. Not to mention the expense. Not a cheap hobby.
All those colonies would have been wiped out had it not been for the continued efforts of these dedicated landlords. Kudos to all of you.
I remember one post where the martins mobbed the landlord as he walked out of his house. That was amazing relationship between bird & landlord and an example of how much these birds depend on man for their survival.

Martin Colony History: Several colonies with in 6 mile radius.
Have had visitor every year 2014-24.
Two large trees removed in fall 2024 and moved T-14 to a more open location.
2025- 1 SY pair. Fledged 2.

I witnessed Toy's knowledge first hand when i attended her event. She is as knowledgeable as she is gracious and dedicated!!
How close is the nearest colony to you Toy? I'm curious as to where you think your fledglings may go. Maybe those 11 extra stopped in for a quick bite because they remembered you.
Bellefonte PA
2014, 1st year-a few lookers, no nests
2015-23. Visitors each year. But no pairs.
2024- most active year. 2-4 SY male’s hang out most days.
2025, 1 SY pair. 2 eggs, 2 fledged!! Other martins visited daily.
Still eliminating starlings and sparrows.

Thanks guys :).

I left out a lot, but didn't want to make my post too long. Like flipping crickets out my window during a snow storm while I had bronchitis or pulling greater black wasps from chicks throats that have pinchers stuck deep. Every single chick gets a total exam from beak to tail to toenails, at every nest check, for blowfly larva. I've lost too many in the past to them.

Any hobby worth it's salt is work, but the rewards out do the expense & hours required. But I don't really consider this a hobby. To me it's a responsibility I was handed. I didn't TRY to attract them. I didn't even know what they were when they arrived in my yard. They came to me & asked for a house & help. Some get names. Usually the first few back, after that I lose track of who is who, LOL. They reward me with songs & beautiful aerial flights & I love to watch them do the "butt dance" during a rain storms. So cute ;).

Dan:

Thanks Dan. Glad you were able to attend my event.

I would say Loganton is the next closest colony, Amish farm, which is straight south of me over the mountain range. As far as where they go to the "roost site" I would say Erie, as they always head that way when they leave for the season.

The 11 that arrived I feel they were headed for NY state. Possibly Watkins Glen. I often get a few that stop on their way north or south, during migration, for the night & then move on the next day. That why I leave my houses open into late Spetember early October.

Hi Toy;

Great report on your colony, as usual you are doing a remarkable job caring for your Martins. I hope you are feeling well after your surgery.

I am having a good season over here in Western Pa. I had heart surgery in May so I wasn't able to devote as much time and energy to my Martins as I would like, but with the help of friends and neighbors we have been able to get through it, and have a successful Martin season. The weather in this part of the state has been great so far, hopefully it holds up until all the young are fledged.

Keep up the great work.

Hanover Bill.

Hi Bill:
Thanks. My neck is coming along. Hate be on these strict restrictions (no lifting over 7#, bending, reaching pushing, pulling, driving...dang can I breath??). Have 12 more days & then I hope they take me off & I can do normal every day stuff at least.

I hope your heart surgery went well & you are recovery nicely. Slow & easy wins the race ;).

Glad to hear your colony is doing well & you had help with them. What are your counts this season?

Thanks. Same goes for you. They are amazing little birds aren't they :).

WOW 218 fledged. My neighbors would have a fit if I had 58 pair. Heck the 32 Martins I have make enough noise for a "in town" colony. That's why I limited myself to 2 houses with 10 compartments each.
