Martin Colony History: 2015: 5 pairs, 16 babies fledged

Is there such a thing as different arriving groups of ASY? Is there an early arriving group of ASY and a late arriving ASY? Last year was my first year as a PM landlord. I had 5 pairs of PMs nesting in my housing. Two pairs of ASY and three pairs of SY. MY ASY PMs arrived around April 22nd last year. Will they return approximately the same time this year? I have neighbor that that has a large colony about 200-250 yards away from my site and his PMs have been back for about a month now. There are also several other PM sites in my area and from what I can see all of them now have PMs at them. I have had several PM visits in past few weeks, but none are staying in the houses at night. I'm eager to have my Martins back and it is driving me crazy seeing them every where around me but at my own site.
2015 - First year landlord, 10 PMs (4 ASY and 6 SY); 16 babies fledged
2016 - Second year - currently waiting for PMs to return

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

I would say yes. They arrive at different times. I usually get a few ASY's early then thru the next 3 weeks more trickle in. Then the SY's arrive. The ASY's usually have nests built or are building when the SY Males arrive. I have had SY Females arrive before the SY Males. Each year is a little different.

Martin Colony History: 2013,14 - trying
2015 1 pair, 5 eggs, 4 hatched , 4 fledged
2016 ASY male arrived Apr 25, attracted a female , stayed a week and left SY male arrived May 24, stayed 3 weeks no female. Lots of martins here in migration , as many as 22

I am in the same boat as you. Last year was my first year as a landlord, with one SY pair fledging 4 new martins. This year, I have seen a few tree swallows, but no martins. I am growing concerned that I may need to start over this year.

I think you will find that the older the colony site the earlier the birds return. Your site is newer so that could explain why you do not have martins back yet. Check some of the scout reports by clicking on the name of someone that has been reporting for several years. Most likely you will find that each year the birds come back a little sooner than the previous year, until the colony is well established. I hope your birds return soon and that you have a wonderful year.
