Wooden Poles

Does anybody in here have direct experience with using the type of wooden pole structure as shown by the Fecker GHOST house illustrations ?

A solid 4x4 pole tends to warp. If you make a wooden pole, a good way to try would be to laminate the pole, use treated 2x4s with 3/4in cedar between the 2x4s, then take another piece of cedar attached to the pole (90deg from the first cedar) on the outside of the pole. The cedar in opposite directions would most likely keep it from warping.

These are not solid 4x4 posts. They are a 2x6 on each side with a 2x4 in the middle creating a channel for the cables to go up and over a pulley inserted into the top and down to the winch. I like the looks of the wood, but not at the expense of breakage, warping or low ability to withstand some winds. It is either going to be this for looks or a 3 inch steel square tubing for the new houses.

Well, it appears that not a soul in here has any experience with these types of poles so they must not be too great. I have tried getting a hold of K. Fecker, but they are a GHOST just like their house design when it comes to finding a valid email addy and I don't like calling folks out of the blue..

Hi Greg
Iv been using 4x4 wood poles and totally agree with you about the warping.
The 2x6 poles your talking about would probably work just fine as long as you aligned the edge grain of the 2x6 with the direction of your strongest winds.In our area that's from the NW direction. The edge of thos 2x6 poles will be much stronger then the flat side.

Greg - --- I have wooden poles for my T-14's .. They are two 2x6's with a 1x6 sandwiched in the middle of the two 2x6's.. No warping here,, Poles have been up for 5 years now..

Thanks Dave. I may well go this route then for the next houses built. I do like the looks of the wooden over a rusty metal pole.

I purchased a 6"X6"X20', "wrapped green post", at an amish run company in Mill Hall PA called Triple D truss company three years ago. It has not warped a bit. I dont remember who referred me there, but i was fortunate that an extra post had been returned by some one and i purchased it for around $70.00. Only the bottom 3 feet are wrapped in black plastic material(for underground). It has a notch cut in it to prevent upheaval.
I tried searching green post, but cannot find anything on line as far as where to purchase.
We cut a slot in the top, put a bolt and pulley through, and it works fine for the T-14

after seeing your post, i called Triple D and was a bit shocked when Mary told me to order a single post was $337.00 plus tax. She said the high cost was due to shipping. I guess i was lucky there was a return. Hopefully, if i have to eventually add another post, i will use the 2 2x6's with a 2x4 between as someone previously mentioned..
