Using 9 gauge single strand utility & brace fence wire to make owl guards for plastic gourds. Need help with how far out and apart to place the wire from entrance holes.

I have my owl guards with the ends about 6 1/2 inches apart and 8 inches out from the entrance. The martins do not appear to have much of a problem getting in and out of the gourds with these measurements. They also used the owl guards as perches.

9 gauge wire will bend when an owl sits on it, I bet - they weigh about 4 lbs. you might look at some aluminum rods for guards. If you go to archives section of this forum there are pics of guard rods on gourds.
