- Martin Colony History: Have had Martins for over 50 years
About a month ago here in MN we had a bad storm, it took the roofs off of 2 of my Martin houses, the roofs landed on the ground roof side down. Luckily I had an agile youth, that went out in still somewhat windy conditions and put the roofs back on the houses. I've not only had families hatch from the 2nd floor and I believe the 3rd floor! Could have the eggs rolled back in the nest? Maybe the eggs weren't laid yet. My houses are solid wood, so not easy to look inside. Anyway looks like no one was worse for the ride that the Martin houses made.

My neighbour here in New Brunswick Canada, who had a large purple martin colony, told me that once a wind storm ripped the roof from one of his martin houses. To his surprise, the martins continued to feed their young and had successful nests. The funny part of the story is the martins continued to enter and exit the open-sky, roofless compartments through the entrance holes.
