One of the new settlers at my place is wearing some jewellry!
My Question is how many numbers are there on a bird band? I have spent a few mornings trying to read all of the numbers and I think I have most of them now depending on how many there are altogether. I have the first four and the last four digits, but I think I am missing one number in the middle. Does that sound right?
I know I have 1342 from the left edge of the band, then a dash.
I also know I have 9217 on the right edge of the band. But I think there may be a number missing in between.
So the final number should be 1 3 4 2 - ? 9 2 1 7 if I am correct.
Someone who has banded them may have the answer?

I know last year they put two bands on their birds, but previous years they only had one band. How many bands are on your bird and which leg is it on? This info will also help track down who banded it. Jerry bands on one leg, and there is another bander in Saskatoon that bands on the other leg.

There is one band, a sliver one, on the birds left leg. She is a ASY female as far as I can tell. She lost her mate last weekend so hopefully she sticks around long enough for me to at least get the entire number from her. Hopefully she stays all summer!

- Martin Colony History: 24 Super and Excluder Gourds on two gourd racks, all SREH. Full occupancy. My philosophy is to maximize fledge % with existing cavities rather than adding gourds to grow colony, thus providing opportunities for new colony expansion. Fledge over 100 nestlings yearly from 24 gourds. Band nestlings in cooperation with state university. 2019 Adendum: Reduced colony size to 12 gourds to focus on more intensive management regimen.
Since you are in Canada, you can contact the Canadian Wildlife Service also. They are partners with the US Department conducting bird banding. Just google federal bird banding.

The band series appears to be one of my birds that I banded on July 9, 2012. The band number of my bird is as follow: 1342-92217 according my records. That year I banded just under 400 birds at my colony just south of Saskatoon. Please give me a call so we can discuss this bird in question.
