OK....Why do we play the dawnsong at 4:00 AM? Martin adults and Martin Subbies are sleeping or roosting and not flying around in the night.....right?

Martin wannabe needs encouragement in Kentucky!

Thanks for any advice,

Greg

I've heard mine singing about that time there way up in the air. The sound carries for miles at that time of the morning. And yes the males do fly in the dark.

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

Greg:

Actually they do sing at 4:00 AM. Even during cold weather/rain/etc they come out, sing a bit & then go back in. Some will take to the sky for short flight & then return to their cavity for a few hours.

I hear Robins singing at 3:00 AM.

I've been listening to mine at 4:30 all week long. Beautiful sound that time of morning when everything else is quiet.

Thanks Steve, Toy, and Tony. I saw my first ASY male today!

Dawnsong must have helped attract this martin! I hope he decides to stay.
