New Site Ready for Birds!

After establishing my teaching career, I happily purchased my first home in June of 2014! It's now spring of 2015 and I have my Purple Martin site ready to go! The site consists of a T-14 with four Excluder Gourds, along with a Super System 24 gourd rack that currently holds 16 Excluder Gourds.

The two poles are about 80 feet from my house (hope this isn't too close!) and are far from any large trees or wooded areas. The poles are 32 feet apart. There's also a large pond about 1/8 mile from the site.

This site is about a mile from my parents' site, where I've tried unsuccessfully for nearly 15 years to start a colony - I sure hope I have better luck at this site!

Within an 18 mile radius of my home site, I have also manage seven public colonies, some for over 10 years - each colony site also consisting of a T-14 and a Super System 24 gourd rack with Excluder Gourds. I'm hoping with all of these colonies around with the exact same setup as my home site will help the birds recognize my site as a viable and comfortable place to nest!

Now I anxiously await birds to arrive!

Wow that is a amazing spot. You are lucky you have that good of a location. I have a poor location!!!

Martin Colony History: Started in 1992 From neighbors old 1950-60's colonies. Have 8 Trio 6 Room Houses, 4 MPP Poles, 1 Heath Deluxe Gourd with Troyer Porch, 8 NatureLine Gourds with Troyer Porches, 5 Troyer Horizontals ,& 2 S&K 11" WITH Troyer Porches ready for 2019 Season !

Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

Yep just a little time and your a landlord! So I have to ask, why do you think you never attracted martins at your parents place? Just curious! Trees, lack of martins, etc.?????? Thanks and the best of luck! :grin:

Beautifully open, Daryl - and all the public sites should help 'feed' your new site. Are you planning on adding nestboxes for tree swallows and bluebirds too - now or after you have martins?

We'll be rooting for you!

Great looking site Daryl. You just have to get martins,,,there's no reason you shouldn't. You have all the requirements for attracting martins so good luck!

I bet you don't spend too much time outdoors there when its -20 and the wind is blowing hard do you? :grin:

2011 A pair of subbies fledged three young but none returned in 2012 :-(
2015 One Pair of subbies came and stayed a few nits but got chased away by Bluebirds and Tree swallows. :-(
2017 0ne pair of subbies nested and fledged 4 young
2018 Tree Swallows AGAIN chased away any martins that wanted to nest :evil:
2019 Same old story................ :-(
