I read somewhere that a lot of Martins come right after a big storm. Is that true? Anyway keep your colonies safe!!! Up in PA where I live there is a damaging wind warning hope everyone's colonies stay safe through the weather!!

Stay safe my friends

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

Zach:

Migrating birds us the jet streams to help them migrate north & south. So if a storm is moving in the right direction they may follow those winds. I have had martins arrive just before, during & right after big storms.

Also martins love to fly in strong winds. Many of my colony uses high winds sort of like a game. I have seen many tumbled over & over in the gusting winds of a big storm. They often grip the power lines, beak to the wind & let the pounding rains give them a good soaking, especially if it's been dry for several days or they are full of mites.

Keep asking & reading. I hope you are taking notes. You have a lot to learn, but patience will be your most important lesson ;).
