No, it won't help deter snakes. Best protection for snakes is a pole guard and netting - that combo will stop raccoons and snakes.
Sulphur is good for deterring chiggers! put some in an old sock and dust your socks & lower pants legs.

The PMCA shop has alum. guards ready made for either round, square, or triangular poles; they are hinged for relative ease of taking on/off. See this link:
http://shop.purplemartin.org/Guards_for ... -list.aspx
Other than that, you can make your own out of 8" pvc (recommended dia.)
See the DIY on Chuck's Purple Martin page and I've seen another DIY on the PMCA do it yourself links. It involves slicing the pvc down the center and adding hinges and making a plywood round piece that closes in the top which in turn needs cut down the center after making a round, sq. or otherwise hole that fits your pole. The plywood piece(s) are screwed onto the top of the pvc and lined up with the cuts in the pvc.
For the work involved with making your own out of pvc I really recommend the purchased ones; I've have both and both work well. Bottom line is that top of predator guard tube needs enclosed or snakes will crawl right up through the tube. Tube/guard should be positioned above your safety pin on the pole which should be 4ft. or higher from the ground.

Moth balls will keep snakes away, but all else will still get to your martins so please use guards and netting!!!
