I have a five acre parcel and the owner before us planted Colorado Blue Spruce on three sides of the property. Although the trees are still small, I'm wondering whether this "fortress" type look will deter some new tenants. I've just installed a Lonestar Goliad PM house about 100' away from the trees and about 50' away from the front of our house. The East side is completely open.
Do any of you have a "fortress" style of trees and attracting martins?

- Martin Colony History: six pair in 2014, have grown to 52 pairs in 2017.
Should be ok, some of mine are closer than 100' and fully mature. As long as you have some open flyways.

Not to worry(much). When we moved here, we planted several small trees and hoped they were far enough away not to conflict with our endeavors to attract martins to our yard. The years have passed and the trees have grown taller than the gourd racks; but we have finally attracted martins and everything seems fine
