Do these CD's really attract PM's. Is one preferred over the other?

Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!

Rocky,
If it was me and I had 4 last year, no I would not play nothing. They know where you are at. They'll be back. I have decided no cd's, unless I get crazy in late May and June and have nothing yet. It brings them in but if they are established at another site they won't stay!
I was told if you live in an area where there is a lot of martins, no cd is needed. I played it last year and nothing nested. I had a lot of visitors. But that's what I will do. Good luck!

Martin Colony History: 1 gourd rack with 24 gourd capacity. 2018, my 11th year hosting martins.
18 pair in 2017.

If you are trying to start a new colony it's a great tool to attract martins to your site. No, it won't make them nest, the site itself has to be attractive to them. By that I mean, as wide open as possible and control of House Sparrows and Starlings is desirable. Never let any other species of bird nest in the Martin housing.

Martin Colony History: 2021: 46 pairs
2020: 39 pairs (24 gourds added for total of 54 cavities)
2019: 22 pairs
2018: 19 pairs
2017: 25 pairs (condo predators - steps taken)
2016: 22 pairs
2015: 17 pairs
2014: 9 pairs
2013: 7 pairs (12 gourds added for total of 30 cavities)
2012: 1 pair
2011: 1 pair (first year: 14 rm condo/4 gourds)

I agree with GeneP. The CD was an added tool when we began our colony. Combined with location, wide open spaces and water close at hand, it helped get us started in the first year. Haven't used a CD since that time.
