Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

I use Fluker Farms and some use reptile.com or something like that. Just search those and they should pop up.

Hey Chickadee, congratulation on both events yesterday and wishing you all the luck. I found myself in a bind in February with no crickets and extreme weather. Also was too cold to have them shipped. I went to a bait shop 30 miles away to buy what I could and the owner allowed me to buy boxes of 1000 at his cost as they were just dying because nobody was fishing. I think he wanted to keep his weekly order from the cricket farm the same and was happy to let me have them at that price. Also, I think he had compassion for the birds when I told him what I was using them for. I ended up buying 4000 over a three week period. Just something to think about if your weather is too cold to ship.

Petco has them in stock but they are expensive "gourmet crickets". LOL.
2014 8 gourds, 3 pairs nested. Ended w/ 24 total
2015 24 gourds, 22 nests. Lotsa birds!
2016 24 gourds and good activity.
2017 32 SREH gourds. Great activity.
2018 40 SREH gourds. Good finish despite big storm damage. No more dangling gourds.
2019 56+ SREH gourds, all on 3/8 rods. Birds did very well.
2020 56 SREH gourds.

Congratulations Kelli and Bryan, I wish I had extra crickets to loan you but I am running short as well. I came home to 6 hungry martins this evening, plus the tree swallows have learned to feed with them. Remember that they will also eat scrambled eggs. I have been feeding eggs along with crickets. I think I ordered my last batch of crickets from premium crickets. There are several places online selling them. I must say that I wasn't as pleased with this batch as I have been in the past. Of course it could have been the weather. The temps dipped to 0 right after I ordered. Gook luck to you and yours.

Are these crickets you toss in the air dead, alive, frozen! Can you use mealworms? What is more cost effective?
Blessings,
Rocky

Rocky, take a look at two 'sticky' posts at upper portion of page - one is titled Tips & Info for 2015 season, the other Supplemental Feeding. Those include lots of info about where to buy and how to feed.
