I have learned a lot lurking on here so I thought I would show how I vent my Troyer horizontal gourds. I use a 4" schedule 80 nipple cut in half glued into 45 fitting than a plug till the weather warms up, all fittings are 3/4. I think u get a little better flow than with the 90 street-L fitting but while still keeping the rain out.

Very nice Josh!
I've wondered also, how much the the vent's ability to draw is affected by the 90 degree downward facing elbows.
What would be neat would be to see a smoke test in an unoccupied gourd, on a hot day, to be able to actually see the airflow.

Josh,
It looks good to me. the air flow may be smoother with this set up as you have shown. Any added venting will ultimately help in keeping temps lower in the gourd during hot days. I just slap on a little duct tape over the vent holes early in the season until the temps get warmer, then i pull the tape off.

Just make sure it's legal smoke.
Good venting idea; kinda wish I'd done same instead of 90 deg. but also agree that any vent better than no vent.
