- Martin Colony History: Started trying to attract purple martins in 2012! It's finally happened in 2017! 5 years!!! ASY male and SY female came May 1st, fledged 5 babies!
Did they succeed? How many fledged? They will be back if they successfully fledged babies!
And the survived the journey!
Good Luck!
Good Luck!

Way to go Ivan!! Your set up sounds a lot like mine. My problem is the fact that the closest known colony to me is 20 miles away. I do get some visitors and for the past 2 years, I've had a colony of one--a single ASY male that does bring in some females but they just don't stay. At times he has also brought in a pair but then tries to coax the female away from the male--it never works and the pair leaves. Still, it's a lot of fun and I have no intentions of giving up. My son is very involved with me and we really enjoy the challenge and the various changes we make from year to year. It is so nice to go on this forum and hear about the folks in the south who already have their martins. We just have to wait a couple more months.

2018 Had 1 pair
2019 had 30 pair
I know what you are going through. I had only one pair and it drove me crazy the next year and they showed up the next year. If they survived, they will come back.

Its always tough when you get your first pair the year before and wonder what this spring will bring....
For what its worth after 5 years of trying with zero results I finally had one pair fledge 4 young, same as you, only this was 10 years ago. The next year I had two pair, the year after that still only two pair, and then 10 pairs.
This year I have a shot of being a "martin hog" with 100 pairs if the migration doesn't run into bad weather. You are doing all you can do, keep up the great work.

- Martin Colony History: Trendsetter-8. Set up in 2014 at my summer cottage, a beautiful natural inland lake in N.E. Indiana's Amish Country. T-8 is on cleared land behind my pole barn and adjacent to a farmer's field
2015: Had several flyovers in early June with 1 dedicated SYM visitor who visited each day for well over a month. He brought by a few PM "parades", with 8-12 PM's who would visit all at once, but soon leave. (Added 2 gourds to bottom of the T-8). We discovered a large (Amish) colony apx. 3/4 mile South of our T-8. We think this will eventually be our "feeder" colony.
2016: Put up a Trio G'Pa lakeside. Overall, not as much interest as 2015, likely because of our vacation to Gulf Shores, AL. in early June.
2017: Finally switched over to wheat straw. Success!! One nesting pair. Fledged 4!
2018: Zilch.
2019: Slow start, nothing observed by mid June. Wet, cold Spring a factor??
2020: Barely any sightings.
2021: Several observed high in the sky, eating. No interest so far!
Welcome to the Forum!!! I see that Alliance is almost as far North as my town, neighbor! I would love to know when your Martins showed up in 2014? Also, please keep me posted when yours arrive this year. I hope and pray that we are both pleasantly surprised in 2015.
Be careful how you wish . . for wishes can come true . . be sure that every wish you make is one that's right for you!

Itroyer,
You are in my backyard!! I'm right around the corner from you in the Portage Lakes area of Akron. I would love to know when your first visitors arrive and I will do the same for you.
Did you know the Portage Lakes has just been named The Purple Martin Capitol of Ohio?
Keep me posted neighbor!!

OK Mitch will do, have a neighbor about 3 miles as the crow flies that has a 68 gourd setup and had 62 pair last year and I think I might get his overflow, there is nobody else close with a descend setup. Yes I did hear about portage lakes, I took my boat out on nimishila to watch the roost a couple times

Itroyer,
How far apart are your gourd rack and t-14? I just installed a second gourd rack next to the original to give me 24 and then I have a T-14 with 4 gourds below it. My only problem is that the T-14 is way across my lake and would be a monumental task to move.
That's neat that we are in the same area.

The t14 is about 15 feet from the gourd rack with a perch on a pole, my neighbor has all troyer horizontal gourds and it seems like the martins that show up here like the gourds better
