Very sad news. Sorry to hear about his passing. His many years of martin landlording has made a difference for the martin population.
ImageMite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.

Curious. Why did his colony shrink? Cold weather?

Thanks to all for your kind words and thoughts. tim, i am not sure why the colony shrunk. If it was weather related it would have been during migration as we had favorable weather here this spring and summer. These were homemade racks (16' tall) and could not be lowered for nest checks.Charlie controlled the sparrows but I could not convince him to put guards on his poles as he said he never has had any problems.I walked his yard and and saw no feathers or bones. I helped him this past spring w/ the gourds and will be in touch with his wife this spring to see what she wants to do.

Leroy, Charles' name is familiar to me as a longtime member of the PMCA. We used to put the mailing labels on the Updates by hand, and the names of the old timers have stayed in my memory. If you can help his wife maintain some housing for the martins, that would make a lovely tribute to him. Martins are not abundant in that area.

Louise, I forgot to mention that Charlie was a PMCA member- thanks. His wife has been wanting him to downsize for the past few years due to his health. He had his gourds on 5 racks, if she wants I will put up at least one rack and should be able to get at least 10 gourds on it. It would be a nice tribute to him. cs
