I have received an email that some Missouri PMCA members, not frequent posters here, have confirmed a large roost outside Glasgow Mo in cornfields along the Missouri River. Shows up I think on the Kansas City radar for several years now. They have submitted forms via Project Martin Roost to the PMCA.

They did write to me this: "It is the same area reported as unconfirmed roost in Chariton County, MO on the PMCA site."

P.S. see their driving directions below.

We are working on fixing whatever it is that is broken on the PMW reporting form online - we're sorry for the problem, what perfect timing....NOT!

The problem is not consistent, making it harder to find and correct, so fix not likely going to happen today. In the meantime, martinroost report info can be emailed to Bob Aeppli, who will enter it into the database so reports can be viewed online. [email protected] or [email protected]

Here are the driving directions from Missourians Elaine and Kip Hagan
who found the roost...

Directions from Marshall:
Hwy 5 north out of Glasgow to Co Rd KK, turn left on KK.
Take KK over Chariton River , turn left on gravel road 430. Take 430 straight and it will dead end on a levee.
We were on this levee southeast of the roost. We may go back this week to see if we can see them from the northwest side.

Hope others can try to see it as well.

This is the link to the "confirmation" on the PMCA Roost registry -- now updated.

So is dusk the best time to view this roost, or would you be able to see any activity during the day?

Hi Amy

I'm never sure the exact timing of "dusk," although I have a "dusk to dawn" light in my yard.

When I've seen martins descend into a roost, it's after sunset and nearly dark. Late in the afternoon, you might see martins massing on power lines or in tall dead trees a few miles out from the actual roost location. These are sometimes called "staging" areas before the martins move to the roost. Others here with more experience in this may add more.

This is great news for the midwest. I will make this info available at the Iowa State Fair in hopes that visiting Missouri landlords can investigate further.
ImageMite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.

John,

Thank you for the info. I'm only a couple of hours from this site, so I may try to visit.

Thanks again...

Has anyone been to this roost? I have someone asking me if it's still active...I have not been able to verify.

Thanks - John Miller

P.S. 8/13 -- I do see an image NW of Columbia in the general area.
