Darn Snakes

Had a great year and all my Martins are grown and gone. The only bad thing this year that I am aware of is this snake I found on my gourd rack. It had a bulge in its stomach and when I cut it open I found a adult Purple Martin. I was so mad. This is a first for me finding something like this. I heard the birds making all kinds of noise while I was in my house so I went take a look. Apparently it was on the other side of the rack when I got outside because I did not see it right away. It was not till I started lowering the rack did I see it. It scared the hell out of me! got my pellet gun and took care of him. Here are a couple of pics.

So sorry he got your martin and whatever was in nest. Thank goodness you found the snake as soon as you did and got rid of it. We had a snake this year and it emptied 3 gourds before we found it. We only found 1 adult martin inside him. He could have eaten more adults I suppose. So glad we were doing weekly nest checks at that time. I was very paranoid for weeks after that.
What kind of snake is that? Was told ours was a corn snake.

this is my first year as pm landlord. i found the first snake that tried to invade the colony but i didn't take the threat seriously enough. another snake did invade the nests and was living in the compartment. thankfully, the martins had pretty much left by then. it and any new colony will have a preditor guard. i don't kill the snakes. i carry them out back and release them. i want them to kill rats.
