how far will they fly on a normal day

I am a prospective landlord and am hoping to attract martins, but so far have been unsuccessful. I built a T14 and put it up in April. How far will martins fly in one direction? I ask, because i know of several established colonies within 7 miles of our location. 8 active sites(all T14's) are within 3 miles. I am going to begin playing the daylight chatter CD as soon as it arrives, but am curious, if the martins that will begin to fledge soon from these other colonies, will fly past our set up and perhaps remember it for next spring.

Dan G , I don't know the answer to the longest distance but I am sure that in the fall when the male martin takes his fledglings out touring that he could easily take them to three or seven miles if he likes the site. Others will chime in who are more experience than I.

Later in the season when area colonies are done fledging, I've observed lots of martin flyovers headed to the roost in late afternoon/early evening. The roost is 7 miles away so they are flying at least that far & I suspect many are flying much further than that.

Dan, adult martins could fly 3-8 miles in less than half an h0ur. I would bet that if your house is open and unencumbered, martins have seen it numerous times during this spring.
Where martins will fly with nestlings is determined by food resources, safety and instinct. I hope some are headed your way in the coming years. Thanks for your efforts and interest.

Research has said martins will fly up to 7 miles away from their site for water. That is why to attract them you need to be close to water. So I assume when my martins are here they go no farther then 7 miles away from home. But who really knows?
