- Martin Colony History: I started trying to attract Purple Martins in 2011. I got my first breeding pair in 2013.

Congratulations DornCounty! I had my first taste of HOSP issues this season. I finally won the battle. Will trap in earnest over the Winter when they feed in large groups.

Andrew I think you won the battle (s) but never the war on these pests. I trapped a male today in the Blaine's, shot two males yesterday, have 4 females in the Blaine's, have rid myself of other females just to keep from feeding so many in the trap. Though not as many as before the season started, they seem to keep showing up one or two at a time every other day or two...unfortunately ...
22 year landlord..9 Rack Systems for 2018 and my home built T-8 for a total of 166 cavities..160 pair in 2018 ..SUPER COLONY!!! Love You Bev... Fan of those St. Louis Cardinals!!!!!

yeah.. humans will never win the war... we can only hope our martin friends somehow evolve some sort of desire to fight these guys.
But I am happy to do what I can... It's just fun to claim victory weather I win or not.

About a week after you think that you won the war, another batch of young will show up, and the war starts again

Yep - enjoy the small victories! I had a couple of years where I only had 3 or 4 show up. Then a year where I quit counting after 75 (last year). Now this year - only 11.DornCounty wrote:yep.. I'm calling it... I have defeated them for 2014.

I've just settled into a rhythm and am much calmer because I know exactly what to do when one shows up.

I was successful in trapping 2 pair of house sparrows, but now 2 more pair have appeared! I bought the sparrow trap to go in the compartment they want to occupy but now when the sparrows show up the martins are chasing them off! Go get email Martins. This is my second season to house Martins and we have 8 pairs! 15 eggs of which 4 have hatched! I am trying everything I can to trap the sparrows. We found 2 eggs cracked and we discarded them. I was so sad! The sparrows were not this bad last season! Need your advice!
