Hi everyone. This is my first post and also my first attempt to become a martin landlord. I enjoyed my neighbors' colony, but it went extinct due to circumstances and no maintenance.
I have a telescoping pole with 3 natural gourds and 4 plastic ones. So far, no success, but I remain optimistic.
The other morning I was beside myself. At first I thought a starling was stalking my gourds, but I put the binoculars up and it was a Martin. I should have recognized that chatter it was making, but haven't heard it since the neighbor moved and the houses weren't maintained.
Anyway, it sat up on top and chattered away then checked out about 4 of the gourds. I was so hoping to see others, or a return with others. But, it hasn't happened. I'm not giving up. I wondered if it got confused and thought it was somewhere else? I hope it was a scout, and will come back with a family and friends!
I got so EXCITED!

Well, that's a start, at least one martin knows of your site. Hope you get martins to move in this year.

Well, it came back again this morning. Went in one of the gourds and stayed a while. Later it came back and perched on the wire off to the side of it. It didn't come in.
Then, a bit later on, 4 came circling around, one flew down really close but as fast as they came they left. :( I'm trying to understand the behaviors, but being new I'll just have to rely on you guys that have experienced this before.
Still optimistic.

I know I'm not talking to myself and don't mean to hog my post, but a single martin came back again, @noon and spent some time checking out 3 of the gourds. So far only the natural gourds interest them or him or her. I don't know the difference, if it's the same one or not.. At any rate, at least there's some interest!!
